Sordin advice

I've been looking into getting a set of msa sordins, after doing a bit of research I think I want to get the supreme single com headset. The thing I'm having trouble with is finding the correct ptt and radio. The only radio I have is a motorola single pin, which I am almost certain does not have a ptt which will fit it. Basically I'd like to know what kind of radio and ptt setup is most cost effective for use with sordins.

I used to have a Ranger Comms Sordin which I got professionally rewired to work with Motorola GP300's. Credit to the shop that did the work (a really good radio store in the UK that specialises in this kind of thing) they managed to make it work. I would never class that combination as stellar though as the Ranger Comms were designed to work with military radios that power the mic, and the GP300'd did not.

Subsequently I sold the Ranger Comms and started using "normal" Sordin ProX in conjuction with a Bowman headset (the Bowman is designed to fit under Sordins). This worked every exactly the same as the Ranger Comms in day-to-day use and gave me the option to use the ProX as just ear protection without a boom mic. It was also a hell of a lot cheaper than a comms enabled Sordin :) It's also gives the option of "dual comms" through a hand mic with a output that can connect to the aux input of the ProX.

So given that you have a Motorola single pin radio at the moment, one option is to pick up the a cheap ACM Bowman and correct PTT from somewhere like ebaybanned and then put a normal set of Sordin over them for epic "cheap" win. Then when you upgrade the radio you only have to buy a new PTT.

Lefty,

Technically in the US you need to have a HAM Radio Operator's License to transmit on any radio device stronger than 0.5watts, Motorola Talkabouts (& the like) are 0.5watt units. That said, 90% of the people that I know that use radios with more than a half a watt of transmitting power do not have the appropriate license, and so long as you use some common sense when using the radio it's doubtful that you would get in trouble. Use the radios at your own risk though.

Unless you're using a PRC, MBITR, or some other military radio w/ a 6 pin connector you will need to get a custom wired PTT for a set of sordins. I say pick up a GP300 or similar radio, something with either a 2-pin Motorola or 2-pin Kenwood connector, and have the PTT made. I'm currently having one made for a MTS2000, my cost is $150 for a U94 style PTT from Downtown Tactical (special order, just email them), but other places also do similar work (SRS Tactical, TCI, TEA Headsets, etc.).

The reason I suggest a 2-pin model over others, is that the connectors are generally a few bucks cheaper versus connectors for the Motorola Jedi-series radios, like mine, for example. The radio's themselves can sometimes be had for a little bit cheaper too.

There is an item listed on eBay that seems it may be what I need. Its being advertised as an mbitr 6 pin ptt with an icom connector. If its what I think it is it looks like it would enable Sordin supremes to work with the high quality, but legal icom radios. Could someone who knows a bit more than me take a look.

Any interest in mic'ed MSA Sordins? I have three black left handed ones, three black right handed ones, and one green left handed. All brand new. No packaging. Green is $200 the blacks are all $185. They're all neckband versions which are generally harder to find and a bit more secure on your melon for rigorous activity (vs headband models). They're all legit and new. I'm moving them for a buddy. So no trades I'm afraid. It's a good price just for the hearing protection alone.

Regarding PTT's, my team and I all use Sordins and ICOM radios with two pin connectors. I've seen a seller on eBay selling legit Icom PTT connectors that work great and quite a few of us have bought from that listing:

PM me if interested in the headsets.

I assumed that's what you meant, I just wanted to make sure anyone else looking who wasn't as knowledgable on the subject didn't get confused. As uscm said the linked PTT should work just fine for you. That's a decent price too, I had to pay ~$175 to get a PTT to go between my Sordins and my MTS2000.

I used my Dual Comm Sordins this weekend for the first time. I use a puxing 888 (kenwood two pin). I had issues with my teammates hearing me (I sounded really quiet to them) and vice versa, even with my radio turned all the way up. Could anyone tell me what the issue might be?

I obtained the headset from ebay and the PTT's are converted china ones (U94 style). Thanks for the help. Hopefully I didn't hijack too much and it can help out other curious members wanting to venture into this type of kit.

Its because of the inpendance difference, I had the same issues with my setup (puxing 777 and sordins) and I changed the mic in the headset to a mic I took from a chinese speaker/mic i had laying.

Yep, this is exactly the "problem" I had with my dual comm Sordin. I opted to not change the mic (so that it retains its value on resale) and have a shop do something to the PTT to make it work..... with not quite satisfactory results.

Animal Mother, you'll need to either change out the mic or get the correct PTT. The PTT's designed to be used with Sordin/Comtacs/Liberators/etc. have an amplifier built in to solve the impedence issues (I don't know why they're there in the first place though).

To get a propper PTT wired for a two-pin Kenwood connector, you'll need to have it custom made. A lot of radio shops do it, I picked up one from SRS Tactical, but TCI, TEA, and a number of others make custom wired PTT's.

Edit: In the case of the Puxings, my friends who use them noticed that some accessories didn't work correctly on the standard models (specifically the 777 series), but they would work on the plus model.
