Phalcon51
I'd like to get iimpressions on both these guns in regards to build quality, performance and reliability. Looking to use it for CQB. Will either take a 9.6v battery? I'd like to get a fairly high rof. What are the pros and cons of each, in your opinion? Thanks
AngusSkie
The G&G will take a stick 9.6v with no problem. I have a G&G and I have had no problem with it other than I can not seem to find Mid caps for it and I need a new tappet plate, but the tappert plate is just wear and tear on the gun. Other than that. I like it alot.
Blink43va
Most people will tell you to stay away from both.. but let me tell you. The G&G UMG is an awesome replica and is worth buying in every aspect. You can read my review of it here: (its a bit dated, year old review) http://airsoftcore.com/reviews-169.html I have successfully turned about 10-12 people on to this gun and they all have loved it also. They only thing I can think of that needs to be replaced is the hop-up rubber. Having experience with both, I would go G&G. The STAR and G&G are somewhat comparable in build quality externally, but I would go for the G&G for reliability. Mine has been running great with a M12* spring and metal bushings for about a year with about 25000 rounds through it. Also dont buy the 9.6v 1400 mah batteries from AEX. Go with 8.4v Intellect stick batteries! I can get a full day of play off one of the Intellect stick batteries. -Blink
Phalcon51
Thanks Blink, great write-up. Sounds like a good gun.
UMGuy
... I have successfully turned about 10-12 people on to this gun and they all have loved it also. They only thing I can think of that needs to be replaced is the hop-up rubber... -Blink <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's true. He convinced me into buying one and I love it. it is a great little rifle with some kick. The range and accuracy are alittle disappointing, but for a stock gun it stands there with the rest. The mags are the only downer to this gun. The high-caps can be unreliable and the low caps only hold 60rds. And sadly, there are no mid caps for this beauty. I highly recommend it. I am going to do some internal upgrades and she should be a beast.
badsailor
I own the Star UMP and personally it is my least favorite weapon. I have had nothing but problems with it. The gun looks great and comes with a great case, but I have had all sorts of problems. First the battery wouldn't fit. You either have to modify the wire that runs from the negative end of the last cell to the battery connector or dremmel out the battery compartment in the gun itself. Next the hop up is complete junk. I replaced it with a standard TM G36 hop unit. The outer barrel wobbles after about 1000 rds and needs constant attention. the silencer that star released for it is hollow and might as well be a barrel extension. The tappet plate is junk also and so is the selector plate. Both of these broke the first time I opened the gearbox. I eventually replaced the entire gearbox. The magazines are junk also. Mine is at the point where if your firing on Semi, you have to hold the gun sideways or upside down to feed properly. It misfires all the time because of the cheap springs in the magazine. If you get a hi-cap the winding wheel is difficult to turn. I don't mean it sticks, I mean the wheel is recessed and is a slow turn. I would stay away form this gun and get the G and G version. I would not reccomend this gun to anyone.
uscmCorps
I own a G&G UMG and it's my primary for CQB situations. I absolutely love it. Used it in many CQB skirmishes so far and I have zero regrets buying it. The only thing I prefer on the STAR is the fact that the STAR version has fake rounds in their mags which is bit more realistic looking. Other than that... it's G&G all the way! At AEX they had some custom 9.6v NiMh 2000mah Intellect stick batteries (using AA sized cells). These batteries fit nice and snug into the top of the receiver's battery compartment. I switched all my connectors to Deans connectors and removed the hatch for the battery compartment at the back of the gun. This made it much easier to access the battery and it is non-visible when the stock is unfolded/extended. When the stock is folded, the battery is wedged in there so it won't fall out. The 2000mah custom battery from AEX allowed me continuous play all day. Using a SpecOps Brand AK chest rig allowed me to hold 8 UMG mags in the chest rig (2 in each pouch) and one in the gun. Throw in a Maxpedition Rollypolly as a dump pouch and you're ready to rock!
Icey101
I have owned alot of different airsoft guns and normally keep them for a few months then get rid of them. My G&G UMG I have had for almost year now and never plan on getting ride of it. Only real complaints are I have 9.6v 1700mah battery, which is a pain to mess with but more than worth it. And the magazines are a bit cumbersome to carry. I currently have 5 standandard mags with 4 being mounted in SDS pop-flare pouch on leg rig. As for the hi-caps miss feeding, I have never had issue with the one hi-cap I own (but I dont use it all that much). My gun was V1 with old tappet plate, so intially I was having huge miss feed issues. After emailing G&G they sent me the new tappet plate for shipping cost only. Currenlty my gun is set up with short stroke piston/sector gear (-2 teeth) and few other minor upgrades. Last time I checked it was shooting 270-280 FPS.
uscmCorps
Mine is stock and shoots around 330fps. I don't think there are any version 1 UMGs out there anymore so buying one now should be relatively problem free. I use standard mags myself which feed flawlessly. Regarding finding a good rig to carry all the long mags... Personally, I hate having anything strapped to my legs as it just slows me down and generally gets in the way. I used to use a KSC TMP, and would strap those heavy mags 3 a piece to each leg. I quickly switched to carrying them either on the chest or off the waist belt and noticed I moved much more fluidly. I do the same thing with the UMG mags... chect rig all the way. The only thing I have strapped to my leg nowadays might be a BHI Serpa to hold my 1911, but that's it. Try keeping your legs as free as possible of accessories... you maybe very surprised about the results.
Rapier
The new STAR UMP's have fixed the battery compartment issues. I can drop any and all stick type packs into the new UMP's I've gotten in at my store. Thank god because my battery people where raping me on the custom packs with long flat bars instead of a wire up the side! Also, you can fit a 9.6v or 10.8v pack in the new star UMPs. All the ones I've sold have worked flawlessly except for one that didn't have the nozzle installed on the tappet plate right. We put a new tappet and nozzle in just in case it had some wear on it and it's been running great for a year now.

JPMorgan
I own a Star UMP, and I love it. I have turned this gun into a high speed CQB gun running about 26rps with a stock CA spring. All the gearbox parts are stock with the exception of the spring and piston, and I have had 0 problems with it after about 15000 rounds. The gun does have a couple of problems. You will probably have to mod the battery wiring to get it to get it to fit correctly unless you make your own packs (which I do). And the high cap mags do suck, and the mid caps are hard to come by (although mine work very well unlike one of the other posters).
grifon
*sigh* I had a G&G UMG and got rid of it, shame too because I loved the gun, I just didn't love the headaches it came with. Hop up never stayed in place despite the bucking change, too many misfeeds, battery wouldn't last. I want to get another at some point when they get the issues worked out, but not til then. I've had no problem with my Version 2 at all and everyone whom I've spoken to who has bought one of the version 2s has been very satisfied with theirs. Don't give up on 'em yet! Blink43va
Also... I found that my hi-cap was great... while two different standards I have tried didn't feed to well... This gun is great overall though. If you want better range and accuracy, i'd do the following. Get an extended inner barrel (along with the right cylinder so that you can match that up with the length of the inner barrel!). Then the G&G UMG Silencer to hide the inner barrel. -Blink
DarkLite
G&G >>> STAR. Oh, and another thing - A chinese company is soon realeasing a clone of the G&G UMP - and it looks to be VERy good. Might be worth looking into.
