Nickona
Hi everyone, Trying to see if anyone can positively ID this chest rig. It looks as if its designed to take grenades or some sort but thats all I know My initial thought was South African but not sure about that as it hasn't turned anything up Here it is: So any help would be great! Thanks Nick
Skarclaw
local surplus shop had one of these - the tag said it was a south african vest. my memory is hazy but for some reason I think its to hold 40mms? edit: just read your post properly - yeah I think it was for grenades
Nickona
According to some of the guys on the SA forums its not south african despite looing very SA in its design
abbadon101
Are the pouches divided inside for something about the size of a 40mm shell? If so could it be a rig deigned for carrying baton and tear gas shells for the 37mm launchers?
Nickona
Yea thats what it looks like.. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case just need to find out who used it!
Skarclaw
any updates?
Nickona
Nope.. a guy in SA was skeptical about it being made for a merc as there was normally a minimum order.. a one off is currently my thoughts but he said he hadn't heard of one offs being done...
Skarclaw
By one off I assume you mean a limited production run? As I've seen one in the flesh was priced at £40 iirc good luck with the search - interesting bit of kit for sure
abbadon101
I have seen a couple of these on ebay as well. Sure its not a niemoller rig of some type?
Skarclaw
mmm I'm inclined to think that is SA... 1) the design does look similar 2) 18 40mms might be considered excessive, unless you had an MGL 3) the one I saw was labelled as such (although I guess this doesn't really mean anything)
Nickona
SA seems like the most logical answer.. however, no one on the SA forums has seen one before!
Nickona
I've taken some more photos...
Spacemonkey
I would say iy could be Niemoeller. I have some NM kit which has the same buckles for the pouches, which are awful to use IMO.. Have you checked if it could be Israeli as some of their stuff is similar, and has similar origins...?
AceOfSkulls
Is it the same colour as your other SADF stuff? SADF chest rigs usually have a map pocket on the back, but there are so many varients. It could of been a limited run for a specific unit as that seemed to happen alot in south africa. Spacemonkey
It looks like a badly exposed pic which means it could be the same green as my NM chest rigs etc. Look in the SADF/Rhody thread and you'll see my kit.

Nickona
Yea it does look about the same as your Niemoller kit.. I was sent an article from Combat and Survival dated May 2004 claiming it was a 32 Battalion rig who often had stuff made in non SADF colours (nutria) and made without labels so they couldn't be traced back to SA Here's a link to the article: http://s1179.photobucket.com/user/Nickona/library/Rig?sort=3&page=
Spacemonkey
Great article! Interestingly, a few of my green chest rigs have been halter necked like the one the lovely lady is wearing, but I also have some with the padded shoulder straps. I have the vest, but with a smaller butt pack pouch on it, like on the M83 vest.
Nickona
Got this from Matt at camo collectibles.. seems like the mystery is solved! "Its a Bophuthatswana chest rig. Former South African homelands. It's actually part of a bigger contraption, like a belt kit type of thing where the chest rig clips onto the h-frame shoulder straps." Skarclaw
Saw this on facebook, anybody have any ideas? I'm inclined to think S.A or maybe Israeli??
Spacemonkey
Looks custom made to me, maybe for the FAL mags???? Would make a nice fishing vest...
Skarclaw
Looks custom made to me, maybe for the FAL mags???? Would make a nice fishing vest... You're dead right. And yeah it would - infact I came across it on a bushcraft group. Somebody there identified it as a custom jobby:
frogfish
Nikona.... I just had a thought about that other rig you have, maybe a Milkor MGL rig.
Nickona
Frogfish, already found out: "Its a Bophuthatswana chest rig. Former South African homelands. It's actually part of a bigger contraption, like a belt kit type of thing where the chest rig clips onto the h-frame shoulder straps."
Spacemonkey
Wow, that's one of the old Survival Aids catalogues. And that was a pricey rig back in it's day.. !
