unimatrix001
How much of a differance is the dialect all over Germany? If you put a German from the far north togehter with one from the deepest south, and both speaking their own dialect they will not able to understand each other. East-West difference is very small compared to north-south. Therefore most german speak Hochdeutsch (german literary language) if they have contact with foreign people or with somebody from the other end of Germany (sometimes that's the same ). Otherwise it would be impossible for them to understand very much. The difference is even larger then the one between Oxford English and Aussie-Slang. The hardest german dialects for foreigners are some sub-forms (yes, we have dialect-forms of dialects ) of bavarian, friesian, austrian and swiss-german.
