If however, you want sheer brilliance and devastation, try a Vulcan bomber. fast, delta shaped, and the best thing was, when it went low level (hence the green camo on the body), it was hard to shoot down, unlike the B52's. The greatest defense nowadays is not how many guns you have but how invisible you are. More and more U.S. military aircraft are becoming stealth and virtually invisible to radar, you can't get a lock on something you can't track, and if you do there is always the missile jamming and good ol' chaff/flare I beleive the Soviet Union was virtually bankrupt with trying to keep up with U.S. military advancement. Of course, not every single missile is heat guided, let me break it down for you, the different catagories of missile: Radar Guiding:- requires the use of the fighter to lock onto the aircraft, after the missile has been fired, it requires that the pilot keep the plane on lock until impact, this is because the missile follows the radar from the mother aircraft, and follows it until it hits the target aircraft. FAF or Fire And Forget: This kind of missile, is as it name says, a bog standard fire and forget, the pilot just locks the missile onto the target, and once fired, the missile keeps lock onto the aircraft, and lets the pilot go for other targets. Heat guided: Missile simply locks onto the enemy heat signiture, usually in this case, it's the engine exhaust, they can be direct impact missile's or proximity missile's, exploding near the target. I could go on, but then it goes into AA Missile's, ICBM's, SLBM's etc. I beleive the Soviet Union was virtually bankrupt with trying to keep up with U.S. military advancement. Lockheed Skunk Works has produced some very advanced/ effective aircraft including the fastest plane in the world (SR-71 Blackbird spy plane) although I do not know if it still has that title. The future of aerial bombardment is U.A.V.s Which the U.S. has prototypes for. They are ideal since they do not risk American pilots on dangerous missions and can be considered expendable. As for the B52. It can carry a bigger payload that is true but it is Big and fairly vulnerable (although they would have fighter escorts on bombing runs). They were used to bomb the hell out of the Afghan mountains. A B2 is virtually invisible and can carry whatever the mission calls for. We can also launch long-range cruise missiles/precision nukes from: Ships, Submarines, Silos, and our Bombers. In general, we have variety. Just because the president is a total moron and has hurt the U.S. name doesn't mean everyone else is. I don't want to get into a flame war but think before you start calling people names. In terms of avionics its the most advanced due to its FSW, technoligcaly it is not. Not sure what one looks like here's a pic. This Aircraft here has been nicknamed the "raptor killer" The Mig 1.42, it is quite a nimble fighter, however, it has seen limited useage within the Russian Airforce. It is definitly not ready for mass production (unless the russians are thinking about getting eastern europe agian).
