Who thinks building technology has gone backwards? Millenium doom is designed to last 50 years, Salisbury Cathederal is in the region of 900 years old (and still looking quite impressive compared to more modern buildings).

Whats the oldest man made structure in the USA?

No. Military wise, we totally kicked their *albatross*. But, with media coverage, the draft, deserters, horror storeis, and so on, not to mention all the ###### as far as stuff a soldier could and could not do, it was drather nasty. We lost 40k. The lost several million. We took nealry all makjor missions at the jugular, and stood fast for years. But the war was ######, unpopular, and plain stupid. So we left. then the bastards came and took it back -__-

Anyways, stop hijacking the thread! its about thanksgiving o_0

And the fact that we've had to rescue our age old rivals the french from foreign occupation twice in the last hundred years.

Okay so you guys helped a bit in the second one, and managed to finally turn up when we'd pretty much won the first one...But America doesn't seem to get involved in any military conflict it doesn't think it can win... ^_^

Trouble comes when they think it's going to be a walk in the park, and it bloody well isn't.

As for Vietnam, the US didn't win but Vietnam definitely lost - 2 million people, millions of acres of land, untold debt that exists to this day and pariah status in the international community at America's behest.

EDIT: oh, and happy thanksgiving! ;)

I'm still horrified to find out that otherwise intelligent people in America seem to think they didn't lose in Vietnam- it wasn't the media (who pre-1968 were VERY supportive of the war effort) it wasn't pupblic opinion (again, if you check the polls, they were pro-war even during Nixon's reign), it wasn't due to the draft, or desertion, or horror stories, it was because, despite the obvious economic and technological divide, America was beaten by a bunch of guys fighting for their country who had literally decades of experience fighting for it- America walked into a war that'd seen the defeat of the Chinese and the French at the hands of the Vietnamese, and completely underestimate the self-belief, tenacity and resources of their foes.

don't worry though- defeat is always a bitter pill to swallow, and you only have to read an editorial in our right wing reactionary newspapers in the UK to hear how we "lost" the empire (we didn't "lose" it, it kicked us out!), and how wasn't it all the fault of the media and that horrible little oik in the bedsheet and sandles who refused to fight fair (or indeed, at all). facing up to military defeats is the best thing any nation can do, as it usually indicates a degree of maturity, self-reflection and a desire to learn tha one does not tend to see in countries that perpetuate the lies about it achievements.

and yes, Vietnam was damn-near broken, first in its long wars with invading nations, and then by the crippling economic sanctions imposed by the US and her allies, so I suppose you might want to call it a decidely dishonourable draw, but that doesn't sound nearly as pleasant as saying "ok, fair do's, we give up", does it?

Happy thanks-giving though, and I mean that honestly.
