I think the rep system is fine as it is. They are an effective messure of your popularity, nothing more. If you want some sort of system, which says "Who can I trust?" then you need to use a more formal database. This is being done. Look at the Blogs section and the review database, they are an attempt to give a bigger voice to "quality" rather than threads full of spam.

After playing an all day game last weekend my early comments are: 1. Very strong mesh - 320 fps no problem. 2. Fits snugly with my helmet (bolle shelmet) 3. BIG 4. I could use my Red dot, but had to lean more than with glassess. 5. Neck cover is excellent but I could not see my load out and needed to be able to feel my way around my kit. 6. Hmmm Blogs... sounds like a good idea, but it is impossible to keep them on topic and nearly as hard to keep them updated.
