FTZ-WildeCard
It's coming out this Friday! http://www.xcom.com/enemyunknown/ I can't wait! For those who've not heard of it, I'll try to explain.. In this game universe, present day Earth is being assailed by aliens. The governments of the world are outmatched. The XCOM project is initiated to combat the alien threat. You're here to lead the troops to victory, or at least try to entertain our new overlords with some moving targets.. It's a turn based strategy game, of which you'll probably not see many of this year. The main lure for me is that you can customise your troops. Name them after friends, girlfriends, work mates - set their loook, colour their armour. You can build up your troops with skills and gear, but like actual war, sometimes things go wrong. In this game, when you lose troops (and you will) they stay dead. Any time and money spent in training and nurturing your troops can be lost in an instant. You got to think smart against an intelligent foe. Additionally you have to make difficult choices. You've only got a small team of specialised soliders, you can't counter every alien attack.. There may be a report of abductions, or perhaps an infiltration is taking place to overtake a government official. Which do you choose? Whatever you do, there'll always be consequences to deal with. Anyway, I'm just blabbing at 2am in the morning .. I'm excited. Is anyone else??
DangerWerx
I bought UFO Defense to bide my time til this was released. Too many good memories ( and lost squad members)
aznriptide859
Sooooo it's like a modern Civ?
Leshy
It's been preordered, prey to god they have done a good job unlike all rehashed of late ie UFO aftermath. Does anyone remember the SWAT style game were you could play as eithe SWAT or the terrorists, it was an isometric turn based strategy game?
FTZ-WildeCard
Yes, I had the old SWAT game .. I think it was called SWAT somethingorother. You can try the demo of XCOM on steam, it consists of two missions - one scripted tutorial, one..less scripted mission. I'm liking the changes so far, and LOVE the tactical element of combat. Cover and suppression are in (I know cover was in the original too, but they've tweaked it a bit this time around). I wouldn't say it's a modern Civ, it's more like Silent Storm than Civ -- the scope here is a lot narrower, with more focus on tactical combat. There is a strategic element to it, as well, but no on the grand scale you'd find in Civ.
FireKnife
Isn't this a game that is a sort of sequel to a game made many, many years ago. Like Duke Nukem Forever and Duke Nukem 3D? See my point. ??? Profit. 'FireKnife'
LordElpus
It's a remake of the orginal UFO: Enemy Unknown released by Microprose back in the days of the Intel 386/486 CPUs before windows became an operating system. Don't know if they remained faithful to the original if they have be warned, the original UFO: EU (also called X-COM: Enemy Unknown) was really, really harsh skill curve. Actually, it's more of a diagonal line than a curve. Been playing the orginal the last week or so to relive some old memories. Now we just need someone to revive the Homeworld series. FTZ-WildeCard
FK, don't tar it like DNF lol .. Its development has been nothing like that whatsoever. Yes, I'm looking forward to the harsh learning curve. I played the original very, very briefly, but ended up play Terror from the Deep instead -- g'damn!!! I agree, I liked Homeworld a lot -- but I'm glad Relic has got another Company of Heroes in the making too!
Mike_West
I got shafted on the preorder, the bloody numpties from the local store didn't order the premiere edition with bonus DLC, they'll be just shipping out normal boxes as soon as they arrive. So much for colorful uniforms.
LordElpus
I got it off steam instead.. XCOM Tactical hairdo for players in TF2 and a free copy of CIV
Mike_West
Steam has it for twice the price. I paid like 25 quid for the game, and Steam wants 40 quid.
LordElpus
Paid £29 for the game and seeing as i will be getting Civ 5 with it, i am ok with paying an extra £
FTZ-WildeCard
Might be a territorial difference. I usually buy from amazon, but steam was actually the cheaper option this time around! Not to mention the bonuses.
-Drake-
This brings back memories of that epic old XCOM thread on here ages back where someone named all their characters after arnies members and detailed their exploits and in some cases their tragic yet heroic deaths. Good times.
FTZ-WildeCard
Coming to PC this Friday in the UK! I'm looking forward to saving the world. I'm just going over the naming of soldiers in my head. On the one hand it would be awesome to personalise my team, but on the other hand I'm expecting large numbers of casualties especially at the beginning... Haha :/
Leshy
Thats a good idea Drake, it will force me to add variety to my team. Steam just is not competitive enough when you compare it to Amazon and they have no excuse not to be. I may have to wait a few days but I get games cheaper with free delivery to Spain. I have told Steam gave them comparisons they have yet to reply. They are not as bad as Origin, but they have a lot of room for improvement.

Ironically here in the UK until recently, Xcom was priced exactly the same on Steam and Amazon. Now Amazon pips it, but only by a few pence -- and you don't get the TF2 goodies nor copy of Civ 5 included. Anyway, for everyone still waiting for their chance to bust some alien hides, here is a neat interactive trailer to help you pass the time! It's a bit Choose Your Own Adventure, but a nice diversion all the same. Good luck!
Leshy
I saw when they were priced equally, I opted for Amazon because I'm old fashioned and love new game smell! I dont play TF2, and dont have time to play Civ5. Just out of curiosity how much in £ is Dishonored on steam, £27 on Amazon.
FTZ-WildeCard
Dishonoured is £29.99 on Steam.
LordElpus
£
Leshy
well steam want 49.99yoyos Edit, (dishonored) just dropped to £24.97 on amazon.
FTZ-WildeCard
£40 ish .. Well, that does suck. :/ At least you got Amazon!
Leshy
I think Game in Spain are looking 59.99, Ha!!
FTZ-WildeCard
GSUS! I do feel blessed now.. lol OK, here's my proposal. I'm going to go straight into Classic Ironman mode on my first play through (High difficulty, every step saved, no reloading). I envisage, sadly, that my initial team of girlfriend, mates, etc will be horribly wiped out nice and sharpish. I wouldn't mind trying my hand at a war diary of sorts, but I will need a few more characters to fill out the roster. I'm not suggesting anyone put forward their actual personal details, but if I could collect a few details from interested parties - I will put you into my game and squad as a soon as a rookie becomes available. So, who's up for it? Just go wild, base your character on your Arnies persona, or another original character you've had knocking about. I'll try and do the rest. So, I need from you: - First Name - Last Name - Gender - Callsign / Nickname - Class Preference (Assault/Heavy/Support/Sniper - The cadre available to me will be randomly assigned, so I will try to match you up where I can) - Nationality Preference (If any, can't guarantee this as I don't think you can change this through customisations) - Physical description (Skin colour, facial hair, hair colour, eye colour, etc - I'll try and match this as best I can in Xcom) - Armour Colour (I think, due to pre-order, I get a few options on colours here) - Flavour text (Background, habits, aspirations, etc -- I'll try and incorporate this into the war diary) I think that's all I need. :-) Could be a fun little project or go horribly wrong, but at least I can say I tried. haha
LordElpus
Several members of my gaming clan are intending to do Classic difficulty, iron man on, no saves. Mark "Lord Elpus" Gillard. Male, British, Heavy. Dark Hair Ended up fighting because it's the only way to tinker with guns and get to shoot them. Goes for heavy weapons as it gives excuses for regular rest breaks. Weakness for unknown shiney objects and favorite for "most likely to get blown up"
