XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Mike "Westie" West, male, American, sniper or assault, pale Caucasian, dark hair, stubble, black armor. Enjoys poking dead aliens, dropping Bond one-liners and ambushing. Use overwatch often, preferably from a higher ground. Other than that, the guy's an enigma. Some people think he may not be who he claims to be. "Crazy *sonofabadgeress*. Probably not an alien."

Several members of my gaming clan are intending to do Classic difficulty, iron man on, no saves.

My advance condolences to the e-family of those troops who will be lost. :P

We have been trying to do top difficulty with no saves on the original. I tend to run out of money and troops by the end of the 3rd month and everyone hates us.

Whatever the difficulty, I HATE SECTOIDS! Floaters, Snakemen are easy pickings most of the time. Mutons just need to be hit by heavy weapons. Cyberdisks are also a pain and I can't broadcast my thoughts on Chrysalids.

Edited the above post FTZ to add my bio. I look forward to reading your war diary.

Oh and i really need to stop watching the new game vids, i seriously want to play this game and play it now.

Got your character! Cheers sir.

Yes, I know what you're going through -- I've been on the videos, forums, any gaming site with news about it. Texting my mates about it, telling my brother about it, etc on and on... I think they're already in my head!!

I was thinking of doing a play by play commentary myself but I'll likely buy it for xbox because I'm a lowly undereducated peasant...well that and I cant get near my PC for any length of time because of one of my family members obsession with DayZ.

Obviously you understand theres must be a degree of exaggeration involved in the events as they transpire and also screenshots =D

You can add me !

Sam "Drake" Shirlow - Heavy or support - british (or something comical) - Very tall average build, fair hair swept back, blue eyes - Any color armor but olive/green if possible - Quiet, observant perfectionist with a talent for black humor and stating the obvious.

I look forward to an epic saga of love, hate, tragedy and alien brain squishing.

Got ya! I'm not really sure yet on the format of the 'war diary' I just hope I don't get into too much of a gaming frenzy I forget to keep a track of who has done what with who. ;)

Guys - I've created a googledocs spreadsheet which is open to any Arnie's Member - feel free to top up the character list as you see fit. :-)

Not sure whether I'm being retarded, or whether I just can't add to that spreadsheet from my phone.

- Scott

- Chambers

- Male

- Scorch

- Sniper/Assault

- British

- Pale Caucasian, dark hair, goatee, brown eyes, vertical scar over right eye.

- dark blue armour

- Scorch is an antisocial caffeine addict who was busted out of the army following an incident where he went AWOL in the morocco and was found drinking arabic coffee and smoking hookah in a backstreet cafe in Marrakech. He is a skilled marksman, however, he does tend to take risky long shots and relies on specialist munitions more often than is advised. The last person to ever be called responsible. Will eat just about anything, provided it is covered in hotsauce.

1 must research weapon.. Alloy Cannon. Your assault troopers will love you for it.

I never understood the appeal of shotguns. My assaults run with plasma rifles - enough damage and much more range.

However, I love the Plasma Sniper Rifle. It kills things dead (and with In The Zone perk, it kills things dead very fast). I even had it one-shot a Mutonserker once. And somehow I survive missions with my whole squad (sans Archangel-wearing heavy) wearing Skeleton Suits - once I managed to save sixteen civilians on a late-game terror mission thanks to getting civvies off the roofs with creative use of grappling hooks (and my whole squad survived, go figger).

Also, overwatch. I remember how I left a whole squad on overwatch knowing there's a Mutonserker lurking around. Enemy round. Mutonserker comes in. The air turns green. Mutonserker pretty much evaporates.

Early shotgun coupled with run and gun is a very nasty combo at the start of the game, certainly more so then assault rifles. Lasshottie is pants but the top tier Alloy Cannon is damn right evil and has good range and coupled with the +10% crit per enemy sighted perk will kill big stuff very fast with it's 9 damage, 13 crit damage, 35% chance of crit. Pretty much anything below a Heavy floater (hard to avoid turd related jokes..) will die, and the Heavy Floater has a 65% of just surviving.

For a while i had 2 plasma snipers set up with the perks to allow overwatch/firing after movement and the zone. As long as you find enough low level targets/targets out of cover the death they can deal is ridiculous.

The assault perk of giving extra reaction shots if a target gets within 4 squares coupled with the top shottie really helps verse the 'lids

Yeah, the Close Combat Specialist perk is a real *albatross*-saver even with a plasma rifle. However, I'm just lucky enough to keep the Chryssalids away and leave at least half of my team on overwatch so if aliens try anything stupid, they get vaporized pronto.

However, the fire after moving perk for sniper is pants. Considering snipers' range, Squad Sight is a much better choice, because if your assault uncovers an enemy the sniper didn't see, now he does. And that means he can shoot it. It turns out to be another *albatross*-saver.

Also, keep everyone decked out in Skeleton, Ghost or Archangel armor. Grappling hooks and jump jets can often save you or let you prepare an ambush (if you saw that gas station map, I put sniper on the roof covering the gas distributors, one support in a corner between a van and a distributor on the left, and three more team members behind the end pillars. And then I just started spamming overwatch. What, a Muton Elite? Boom, plasma headshot, Muton Elite down. In a few turns, thanks to my team's accuracy, half of the front wall was gone, allowing the sniper to use In The Zone freely, and then go on overwatch.

I think I'm at the end of Normal Ironman now - didn't get to do the war diary, just so engrossed with the game. Will have to save it for Classic!

I'm not sure if I can backtrack where I am now and get the Alloy Cannon. Not sure what penalty I'd take trying to leg it, as its one of the story missions... the Plasma Rifle are great, extra oomph is needed indoors and up close. :)

OK I've completed this on Normal now - have to say the ending isn't as bad as Mass Effect 3, but it is close.

That said, the journey is excellent, as was with ME3, so overall.... great! :)

Restarting in Classic IronMan now, so I can begin the War Diary - first entry coming soon!
