So, whilst watching some silly airsoft vids from Japan, I noticed that the bolt action rifles being shown were being loaded from what seemed like a trap door reservoir, with possibly a high cap wheel. It looked like a type 99 based on what appeared to be a dustcover. Makes me wonder if it was a custom build or something?

Since only Tanaka makes Arisakas, that's probably custom.

It could be the KTW Type 99. That one features a trapdoor magazine, as you described.
