I don't hate Rockstar for the games they produce, I hate the parents and the game stores that let these games get in to the hands of those who shouldn't be playing it.

The GTA series and Manhunt are quite good games. Innovative certainly. They allow adults (who can tell the difference between right and wrong) to escape their dull and dreary lives and live in a fantasy world where they can do whatever they like - just like a lot of games.

I'll second that, way back when I worked in an electrical type shop, GTA2 days I think. i had this guy come up to be GTA2 (may have been one, was a long time ago.) Now he was well over the 18 rating for the game, no problem, so I have no reason to stop him buying it, fair enough. He didn't look like the sort that'd buy GTA but I'm not allowed to judge.

Of course then, little kiddywinklet runs up to daddy saying "have you bought it yet?"

Me pauses.

"is this for him?" I say.

"yes, of course it is" says man

"you do know what this is about don't you?" Says I

"It's a game about cars for the boy" Says he

"No, it really isn't. It's about stealing cars, killing people and a whole lot of bad language. The 18 rating is just the same as one on a film, and you wouldn't buy him an 18 rated film would you?" Says me using my polite concern voice

"Oh, I didn't know that. It's just a game isn't it?" Slightly bewildered looking man says

"No, it really isn't. I'll put that back for you shall I?"

"Ummm, yes. Thank you."

Man walks away telling off kid for trying to get him to buy afforementioned game.

Many parents still assume that games are for kids. This isn't necessarily true. Other parents simply don't care. I (26) was talking to my GFs brother (20) about the alien films a short while ago. His mum had some visitors that had brought round their little boy (12ish) who I honestly believe had seen more 18 rated films and games than i have and reeled them off like badges of honour to show he was up with the big boys. Obviously we were entirely unimpressed - but I bet his schoolmates aren't. Rockstar just loves to play to that.

I enjoy Rockstar games when I have that urge to punch something. It really helps cool me off and cheer me up.

Of course, I'm never gonna go around beating people with baseball bats in reality. Because that's just plain stupid.

I can't really poit the finger on this subject when it comes to films, because I first saw Robocop 2 and Terminator 2 when I was 6. Yes, the tender age of 6. By the time I was 12 I had seen both Predator films and about two films from the alien saga, definitely seen Alien Resurrection and possibly aliens as well. Probably what *fruitcage*ed me up :)

Having said that, I never thought my having seen those films at a young age was wrong. When I say *fruitcage*ed up, I only mean made me into the geeky person who loves gun-porn popcorn movies, not a genuine psycho. I've always been very mentally mature, so I wasn't disturbed by any of the imagery or concepts. Very little of it went over my head, I was just thinking "this is cool, it's a bit gross but it's only special effects." I fear that few children have this mindset though.

I was genuinely shocked when my younger stepbrother got a copy of GTA3 for his christmas when he was about 10. I asked his mother if she knew what the game was about by saying "you do realise that the first mission you do is to beat the *beep* out of a pimp who's dealing drugs to another pimp's prostitutes?" to which she answered "yes, but he won't understand it will he?"by this I'm sure she meant the fact that he has dyslexia and has trouble reading what's on screen (I know that sounds a bit random, but I know she meant it.)

The other problem is that he's going to be playing that in front of my other stepbrother, who was 6 at the time. He's even more impressionable (I know from experience). Also, he has the habit of learning and reciting lines from films or games and then reciting them at inappropriate times, so I'm waiting for the day when he starts pimp-talking and swearing in front of his prim and proper grandmother. That'll teach his mum not to give them mature-content video games!

That is retarded, what kind of twisted logic is that?

Dsylexia is affects reading and writing (depending on the form)- the poor kid will still be able to see the blood spurting from that recently decapitated prostitutes neck...

i agree with gazchap and xenobait most parents dont have a have a clue about games and being only 16 myself i get a front row veiw of this.

my parents are preaty on the ball themselves they wouldnt let me get any GTA games when i was 12 and wanted them because they were "cool", but alot of parents just dont get it and are hostile towards other things that are far less dangerous to their childs inocence/mental health and blame their childs problems on other things for instance from primary school up untill year 8 my twin brother lewis had a best mate called alan, now alan was a little *beep* he would smash windows, steal stuff and generally be a pain. My brother on the other hand was and always will be a straight arrow. Alans mum however blamed all of alans faults on my twin even though she herself was a single mum with 8 kids and a dangerous ex husband, so too keep her kids in line she would punish them severly for anything (alan was late home from school one day so because he being the oldest had too cook dinner for his brothers and sister, she burnt his 30 pounds worth of pokemon cards) which screwed alan up preatty bad. He also had too deal with his mums and her boyfriends attitudes too other people, now they were all just scum they really were in the end alan had no positive role models what so ever, one time his mother actually took a swing at my mum because she thought that lewis was a bad influence when alan had been suspended from school, not nice.

But too the topic she also let alan play any games he wanted and watch anything he wanted, he owned all the GTA games at the time and also quite a few 18 rated movies and his mother didnt give a *beep* and his dad wasnt allowed within 200 yards of him so video games were where he retreated to when his mum was ranting at him or one of her bf's was drunk and now even in his fantasy world he was stealing cars and bashing people, he had no were too go in his mind so he just went on a downward spiral till even his best friend my brother abandoned him.

so there is the evidence what do u think?

Err, the graphics weren't quite that good on GTA3, were they?

It comes from the fact that he was once playing Crash Team Racing with the language changed to Spanish and hadn't noticed. Even when the characters were yelling at him in Spanish, he still didn't have a clue. Therefore, he cannot understand the language in GTA. According to his mum, anyway.

Having said that, she probably didn't realise exactly how bad it is, with the logic a lot of parents use (and I think it was mentioned earlier) games are for kids, therefore if it's a game it must be safe for kids and can't be that bad, can it? His mum probably thought I was exagerrating to make a point.

I must admit I like GTA3 and Vice City, though I find them a little hard to control because I'm so heavy handed when it comes to video games. I find it really hard to steer properly in GTA and crash quite a bit!

The first time I saw the GTA series being played, I was amused but not phased by it because to me it was just another bit of random violence. My taste in films, games and comic books had made me immune to that. Maybe immune is the wrong word, desensitised is probably better. Because of that I can treat GTA as mindless entertainment.

On my version you didnt, first time I played it (at christmas) my nan was watching, and I shot some gangstas in the head, blood spurts everywhere. My nan says 'ooh, I bet that hurt'

I was 14/15 at the time..

Thing is, if you have someone who knows that they shouldnt replicate anything they see on a tv/compute/cinema screen then its fine. If a parent knows that (like mine did) then IMO its ok the for them to get 18+ games. However, if they have the slightest concern, they should definatly not buy anything like that for them.

Yeah it just depends how responsible you are, but that only applies after a certian age. below areound 13 years old games with loads of violence will disturb a child.Over that age if they are responsible then I think it is ok. playing a violent video game is not going to turn most responsible people in to blood thirsty killers.

You sir are stupid, the game will be rated, just like every other game that should be, is.

Then again I played alot of 18 games for a few years now, and I'm still only 16. To be fair the impression it has on people all comes down the the person in question, my family seems too think I can handle playing these sort of games/watching these sorts of films.
