Yeah.. second does me from standstill to roughly 25 then I might as well go straight to 5th in the mini unless im really going for acceleration and booting it.. I can happily cruise around town at 30 in 5th without the engine labouring at all. 60 is roughly 4700rpm, so motorways are horrendously loud, thankfully it's designed to rev high but it still makes me a little uneasy!

So yeah.. It needs changing asap!

It was/is the biggest problem with the corrado G60. the 0-60 times are abysmal, because you have to change again into third, putting it at a severe disadvantage against other cars.

Also the dieseal gearboxes are of course stronger, (slightly) and have a longer 5th for better cruising economy.

Also only 100 odd thousand miles compared to my gearbox thats within spitting distance to 200 thousand miles...

The more I hear about your Mini the more crazy it sounds, and the more I want a go :D.

My car does just under 60 in second. I do enjoy slip roads heh.

Totally read that as 'my car does 60 in a second'.

I got a bit giddy!

Mine as a Ford auto box, and it hangs on to gears for ever before changing up. It's really !

Free car though, so not so bad!

Ha.  I did read that back to myself a few times and thought could I word that better?  Probably.  Meh.  I'll leave it heh

Sadly I don't have some type of jet car.  Imagine that Gs you would pull in that heh.

I reckon if you stripped one of those Tesla P100D's you'd be pretty close...

I mean they're already 2.28 0-60, which is mental in the first place, give it full on slicks and proper light-weight wheels, strip the interior, maybe halve the battery load? After all, we're only in it if we can liquefy someones internals, it's not like we'll be going up and down the country in it...

All this talk of gearboxes has just reminded me of a story Alan, a project manager I worked with at NTL, told me about his time as a shift manager in the AA's IT operations back in the 80's.

He had an old Ford Cortina, his pulling machine (he and his mate used to pick up hotties hitchhiking to Heathrow), which he fitted a "speed gearbox" from a scrap yard to.

He said he hadn't thought about the gearbox oil so one night on the way to work it seized in 2nd.

At the time the AA used Ford Escort vans for their patrols, and one had been left in the courtyard at Fanum House in Basingstoke.

He spent the night swapping the gearbox over and chucking his dead one in the skip. Goodness knows what the patrolman thought when he jumped in his van and found a hole where the gearstick should have been!

Alan was a real character. Back in the old days you could turn your gas meter around and it would work backwards, so you'd run it for a month, spin it for another month, then spin it back and basically pay for just 1 month's use. One night his wife said to him "You did turn the gas meter back didn't you? They're coming to take a reading tomorrow" and he hadn't!

So he taped the vacuum cleaner to it and left it running in the back garden over night before re-fitting it. They got charged for something like less than 10 cubic feet of gas and nothing was ever said!

Last day of school, the sun is shining, the awesome work experience girl who's an ex-student is popping in this afternoon and then will be back for most of next week which will be cool.

Quotes aren't working at the moment..

To Tink:

It is totally insane! If im ever in your area or somewhere roughly there I'll give you a shout I promise!

On the subject of the Mini im taking it up to Stansted this evening to show her parents for the weekend. Which means going through the Dartford tunnel... I've never been through a tunnel before in it!!!! Im literally like a small child at Christmas this morning. I cannot wait!

To Xaccers:

Sounds like outright theft to me?!

There's a stripped one on YouTube, dominating Street races in 'murica :)

No drive or garage? No problem. Apply to your council to get a 2 point charging post installed by the kerb.

No kerb.

Outside my house is a set of white zig-zags.

There is a bit of space for parking up the road but I guarantee some worthless garbage person in a van would park across both of them and I'd be stuck.

Which engine did you go for?

And also.. Stunt you're based in Medway? I work in Dartford, never realised you were so close!

I'm sorry.

Useful bit of info if you need anything,

Wainscott specifically.

Still the 2.0 16v, but its been a bit of a palaver trying to organise it.

Also potentially sourced the more suitable diesel gearbox...

In Dundee...

My parents live there.

I may be able to bring that to you some time after xmas.

Ahhh I see! Well if you ever need a second pair of hands for anything give me a shout. It's not far at all and I'd be happy to lend a hand!

Also...

The tunnel was AWESOME! Crazy traffic, literally an hour to travel about 5 miles but I left some space and had a decent blast. The noise was glorious!!

What?

It's only a gearbox.

Stick it in a bin bag and chuck it in the back.

Delta, can you help stick an Integra Type-R engine in a MK3 Civic?

I have a feeling that'll be a big job.

Also, if you are going to go to a track day we could take the Clio, go together.

Of course mate I'd be happy to help!! When are you thinking of getting it done? Shouldn't be too bad once you've got the logistics sorted and an understanding of what needs to be done. Have you got access to an engine crane etc?

As for a track day, I'd definitely be up for that, I'd love to take the Mini for a spin on the track, I very nearly took it to the mini track day at Brands Hatch last week but couldn't get arranged in time! But currently have no monies for anything like a normal track day, they're so expensive that I can find. The mini owners event was £99 which isn't bad but some open days are a few hundred sometimes more depending what track!

@Xaccers - have you looked at the Renault Zoe? More range (and better residual performance) than the Leaf. However, there's a new Leaf coming soon that has improved range and is much better looking and nicer to drive, so there will probably be some sharp deals to be done on the current car...

We don't know exactly.

It is my mate's car and he can't decide whether to strip, rotisserie, media blast, seam weld and respray it too so it'll be a while before anything happens.

Plus he is skint until he pays his mum back the money for the Integra Type-R.

I have just found a lovely Pinzgauer, looks nice, top end of my budget.

Only issue is that it is in Lithuania.

My Mrs is actually on board with flying out there and driving back.

I can't afford the transport and associated costs right now though.

He says he'll hold it for a deposit but then I don't know if I can trust him.  First world problems eh?
