Im just curious, how many Spartans did they portray in the movie? My history teacher taught me that each Spartan had his own combat slave that trained side by side with their spartan masters... Thus in real life there would have to be 600 (spartans and their slaves)

Emphasis on the word train.

And... Spartans weren't slaves. And no Helots at the Battle of Thermopylae, especially not on the last day.

Sort of...

Contemporary records from Athens note the spartans taking a large force of Perioikoi with the helots (not just the rural slaves as your commentator claims, but also the urbanised citizens of Sparta - and former owners of the place - who actually did most of the work of administration as the Spartans were forbidden from all but military affairs.... in principle) with them to the grand alliance for Thermopylae.

A conservative estimate is around 600 to 800 Perioikoi with the Spartan rearguard (despite estimates, the accurate number of helots there is largely unknown). Though these would not all have been auxilliary troops and the majority would have been support staff.

Still, add a conservative 300 Perioikoi and a wedge of helots to the Spartans and the 700 ish Thespian volunteers who also stayed behind when Leonidas sent the 16,000 men of the Greek Alliance to better to better positions and you still don't have many people to face up to the 150,000 spods in Xerxes' force.

  • 2 weeks later...

didn't look diseased or disabled... they were just women with lots of piercings and were just dancing and hanging out. Movie was good, and I think the discussion of the film in this thread so far's been quite intelligent, more power to Arnie's.
