POLICE have found more than 4,000 pieces of lingerie in the home of a Japanese construction worker who used climbing skills developed on his job to steal women's underwear.

Police believe that Shigeo Kodama, 54, amassed the 3,977 underpants, 355 bras and 10 pairs of stockings over a six-year period.

He was arrested in February after he stole underwear from two houses, and police later raided his home.

"Since he was a construction worker, as long as he had a place to put his feet he was able to climb, so he had no trouble getting up to the second floor of apartment buildings," a police spokesman in the western Japanese city of Hiroshima said.

"He didn't steal any other kinds of clothing. But as long as it was underwear, apparently anything would do," the spokesman added.

A GROUP of travellers has moved on to the former Ronkswood Hospital site - just 24 hours after another group had moved on.

Residents near the waste ground, now owned by Robert Hitchin Homes based in Cheltenham, were horrified to discover three caravans had arrived at 1.30pm today.

They are now calling on the landowner to secure the site properly once and for all.

advertisementAccording to Rebecca Peckett, of Darwin Avenue, this is the seventh or eighth time travellers have set up camp on the land off Newtown Road in the past two years.

The last group of travellers with about five caravans arrived on March 2 and left at lunchtime on Thursday March 14. Mrs Peckett said Thursday night was the first proper night sleep she and her family had been able to get in two weeks because of the constant noise from the travellers' dogs barking.

"People living around here are really angry. Why don't the owners get a continuous order so they can move them on straight away. Why isn't it secure? It is a dangerous area. They should also stop the kids going onto it.

"The residents of Darwin Avenue should stand up for themselves and speak to the owners and tell them to do something about it. I have lived here for nearly two years and this is the seventh or eighth time travellers have come to the site."

Ronkswood resident Jon Baddeley, who lives opposite the site was very concerned about the rubbish left by the previous group, which included a number of large gas cylinders.

"It is very dangerous. It is a shame that people do this. We have to keep everything tidy but other people can just do this."

He said the new arrivals had set up their caravans on a different part of the site close to houses on Darwin Avenue.

A spokeswoman for Robert Hitchin Homes said they were aware of the latest group of travellers and said they had cut through the fence to gain access. She added that the company would be starting legal proceedings to regain possession of the land.
