No my bad, sorry its just round my way the phrase 'thanks a bunch' is rarely said genuinely Good luck with your exams. By the way both Nigel at JJs and Derek at Montys Locker are really good guys. Derek normally specialises in insignia but often has surplus kit too, last weekend at tutbury he had several sets of brand new DMS in large sizes. T3CH Posted June 14, 2010 Report Share Posted June 14, 2010 Gadge After poking about in the kit section of CiA, I noticed the Heer infantry have Splittertarn helmet covers and Zeltbahns, would enterprising NCO's or troopers be able to 'acquire' the splittertarn parka? Or was that restricted to 'specialist' units? I'm asking as I found a reasonably cheap source for one, (specifically this one http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/2598/347521403o.jpg ) and am planning a Heer loadout (generic infantry, mid to late war) Link to post Share on other sites
Gadge Posted June 14, 2010 Report Share Posted June 14, 2010 To be honest stick to field grey and zelt. Camo in the Heer was very very rare and is overdone massively in airsoft. The parkas are great for lurking around the safe zone or camping but were designed for the russian front so you'll find skirmishing in them hot and exhausting. If you *really* want to do camo and heer then the zelt is the real choice, a small ammount of 21st panzer were issued the splinter pattern smock and helmet covers are uncommon but seen more than smocks. I have a tan and water parka and I think i've worn in *once* in four years at a game and that was a game in January when it was freezing and I was in a static command role. Tunic and trousers in field grey an m43 cap some gaiters belt and y straps That sorts you out to do nearly everything, its totally generic and iconic. With that as a core (and obviously the correct ammo pouches) you can build on it. After that you really need Bread bag water bottle Before you go messing about with anything exotic. A while back i looked through Brian L Davies 'German Army Uniforms 1939 - 45' (considered by many to be a bit of a bible)... *including* the 'common' items of zelt and helmet cover about *one* per cent of pictures had soliders wearing any form of camouflage at all. WildZero Posted June 22, 2010 Report Share Posted June 22, 2010 This was actually post normandy, as the man in question is wearing a m43 combat uniform, issued to units coming back from normandy. Also they are not spraying paint in that picture, they are applying some sort of water repellent to the jacket and trousers I believe. When painting the uniforms, I have heard instances of using a mop dipped in paint used! lol! Also just normal brushes. Are you talking about this photo? It is from a series of pictures in the Michel De Trez book on the First Airborne Task Force. Supposedly it is a member of the 517th PRCT whos uniform is being camouflaged with spray paint by an Engineer. All members of the 509th, 517th and 551st wore camouflaged jump suits and equipment during the invasion of Southern France. Most of it is Cost A Fortune, aalthough the mag-bag and rigger pouches are HT&C Reproductions from Ebay. M1928 is being sorted out as a priority since its current form is TERRIBLE. Not paint commonly associated with it. I am not trying to be difficult, I have just spent many hours thoroughly researching material, And want the facts about pictures to come to the front. I have been doing extensive research for quite some time on both the 517th and 509th. About this specific photo i do not know for sure, in the Michael de Trez book on the "First Airborne Task Force" it is associated with the 517th (camouflaging). If this is right or wrong i can't say. I spotted some other smallish mistakes in this book. But saying it can't be 517th because of the M43 jacket is not possible since the 517th did use those. I think this veteran is talking about M43s: "I remember well what equipment I jumped with. We didn't wear jump suits. What we had is what we called combat suits. It was a heavier green material. The Jacket had two thicknesses of cloth, four pockets and a drawstring at the waist. The suits were spray painted..." Cpl. Dean Essex recollections. "D" Co., 517th Quotes from two veterans talk about camouflaging: "A detachment of Engineers has us pass in a line and they sprayed our uniforms and equipment in colors of green and back..." Pvt. John D. Russel recollections. Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 517th "In vue of our mission, all paratroopers dressed in the clothes they expected to wear on D-Day and then a guy hung a cardboard carton over our head, and started spraying different color paints over clothes..." They are as far i know original they have 1944 or 1945 marked on then but is is very faint so hard to tell. it is nice to play ww2 with getting so hot. thanks for the nice words Link to post Share on other sites
