Okay sorry about this ive been out all night. I'll *TRY* to make some sense of this now....

Ive left OBUA and FIBUA in, but other than that im keeping this to gear related terms. So that covers all gear and weapons accesories, but no weapons or other military terms. For example there will be no RMPs or OPs or SOP's.

Ive added PAls but i need a definition. Ive also added some more brit definitions and terms. Feel free to chip in with more comms kit.

Hexi or Hexamine -

Solid parafin fuel tablets issued for use with British Forces individual field stove (a.k.a. Hexistove - which see). Comes in wax-coated boxes of 8 x 1-inch square tablets that must be broken up into at least four segments each in order to allow them to be lit. Some really annoying problems of using Hexi include the disgusting sticky and sooty residue left on mess tins (which see) after cooking with hexi, and the aggrevation of trying to light the darn things in a breeze, let alone windy conditions. Note that there IS an art to getting Hexi tablets to light first time

Hexistove -

Small folding skeletal metal framed field cooker for cooking rations. issued to British forces for well over three decades. Burns Hexamine fuel tablets (which see). Often replaced by privately bought gas/liquid fuel camping stoves by squaddies (British troops) who hate the effects of hexi on their cooking equipment, and the aggravation factor in getting hexi tablets to light - especially in windy conditions.

GP Rations -

Current Operationl Field Rations for British Forces. Comes in a fairly reasonable range of menus, incorporating religeous and dietary variations. Meals are retort packaged boil-in-the-bag, and come with a large selection of accessories in each box.

Gucci Kit -

Generic term in use with British Forces used to describe some forms of privately bought personal kit or equipment that is (1) expensive and thus desirable (2) more practical or usable - or even sturdy - that issue kit or equipment, and (3) just plain showy, for visual effect (such as Oakley Sun Glasses). Gucci Kit is becming somewhat rarer in usage, and the British Ministry of Defence is apparently finally waking up to the idea that the more it spends on quality kit for its' personnel, the happier and more productive these personnel become. Gucci kit, however, will still exist in the future, because as mush as the MoD would like to stamp out the habit of squaddies privately purchasing some of their own kit, it's a sad fact that many commercially available products are frankly miles better than the MOD-issued versions.

KFS -

British term denoting Knife Fork and Spoon sets issued to all British Forces personnel on arriving at basic training depots.

Mess Tins -

Universally issued in various forms to all manner of Armed Forces, the trypical example of which is the two-part british Military Mess Tin set, comprising a large and (not surprisingly) small pair of 'tins', with folding handles for relatively compact stowage. There ar e a couple of notable third party accessories available from commercial sources for British Mess Tins, which include a non-stick teflon-coated lid for the large tin, to aid in (1) frying things, and (2) reducing the time it takes to boil water in the large mess tin.

Noddy Suit -

NBC protective smock and trousers, so called as the Mark 1 version had a hood that apparently made one look like a certain character from a series of children's books - albeit camouflaged!

Trade Food -

Another term for GP Rations (which see), as they are often traded (most notably with US Forces) for Gucci Kit (which see)

Edited for telling sperrors!

Sorry is it just me, or is this just a thread with a pile of random abbreviations in it?

Listing things from Flack jackets to specific sight units?

I mean ok, can be pretty helpful, but why list specific items, e.g Eotech.

This list could become loooooooong.

That's the point. It'll become a hugh *albatross* list off every def. for military lingo, obviously it will be sorta easy to go through considering its in aphabetical order.

Here is an idea that might clear things up:

For this to work, a mod needs to be willing to do the upkeep on the list.

The idea is that there is a sticky topic. The very first post in the topic should be the list of acronyms, perhaps even sorted by category (ie load bearing gear, manufacturers, equipment, etc...) or just sorted alphabetically. If someone wants to add something, they post to the thread. As the list is updated with the new addition, the mod can remove the posts requesting their addition. Yeah, it would screw with people's post counts, but who really cares?

If there was something that was not added because it didn't fit or was incorrect, a response to the post could be left up for 48 hrs then removed.

I think this would do a lot to keeping the list easily read and easily updated.

Oh.. and here are some more:

K-POT = Kevlar PASGT Helmet

BHI = Blackhawk International, gear manufacturer

SOE = Special Operations Equiment, gear manufacturer

LBT = London Bridge Tactical Company, gear manufacturer

SO Tech = Special Operations Technologies, gear manufacturer

RAS = Rail Attachment System, the next evolution of the rail attachment system concept

BDU = Battle Dress Uniform, generally used to refer to the US Woodland combat uniform, but appropriate to describe any cargo styled combat clothing

DCU = Desert Camouflaged Uniform, used to describe US BDUs in the 6 or 3 color desert pattern.

PRR = Personal Role Radio, radio used for communications within a small unit, such as a fire team.
