You're right doc, my bad. I was thinking of Jason Statham I think, who really can't act to save his life.

Clive Owen was decent enough in Sin City...

Mind you, both of 'em couldn't decide whether their accents were American or English in each of those films!

I wonder if the Bond franchise has run its race to be honest.. maybe a little reinvention and relaunch (as they do from time to time when they cast a new one) helps but I think time has begun to catch-up with it now.. I dunno...

Why couldn't they have made him SBS instead of bleeding SAS, eh? IIRC Bond was in Special Branch of the Royal Naval Reserve (Volunteers) in the books which isn't very much like either of them but at least SBS were part of the Navy back then..

I personally would have chosen Julian McMahon,

Pretty awesome in Nip/Tuck. I know he's not british, he's Australian, but Craig is just all wrong. Looks more like a thug. I agree about Clive Owen, he was super badass in the BMW films as The Hire, but he has two emotions, stone faced and mad. And for bond that just isn't that interesting.

To be bond, you need the accent. That's what it comes down to. You can't fake it. An American actor would DESTROY that movie. Being a huge bond fan, I'll give Craig a chance. I personally think he will do a pretty good job, considering it is Casino Royale, he seems fit for the part. Just give him a goddam chance.

An American playing Bond in Casino Royale, never!

Oh I forgot the first screen Bond was non other than Barry Nelson ( of Hawaii 5'O fame ) and he carried a Thompson instead of a Beretta/Walther in a film called Casino Royal.

Still third time lucky, hope this version works better. Good luck to Mr Craig, he'll need to be good to cary it off.

Dafool for Bond.

INT. CASINO

BOND is conversing with LA CHIFFRE, the owner of the casino. He's a portly gentleman, well-dressed, who's seemingly friendly comments are laced with double-meanings.

LA CHIFFRE - Well Mr Bond, I'm sorry to see you leave the Casino Royale this evening. I do hope your luck hasn't run out...

BOND - BadAss; this is your mother. There are badgers outside your tent.

Ive been confused by one point ever since they 1st announced they will be making this film...

M is to be played by Dame Judi Dench. But the script is based just after Bond transfers from the SAS into MI6. (or so that web link says)

How can that be?

Most preview reports of the film say it will be a Batman Begins style...that goes back to the beginning of Bond. So how can there be the latest model of Aston Martin and again....Judi Dench as M?

Its just really bugging me!

Craig as bond

I like Daniel Craig's acting, and I think we all should give him a chance before condemning him. Unless I'm mistaken, Craig has never played a character like Bond, therefore you can't really say how he's gonna turn out. I'm quietly optomistic.

Being directed by Martin Campbell who did Goldeneye and The Mask of Zorro.

There's always been the supposition that 'James Bond' is a cover identity. They're not just different actors playing him, they're different agents who've taken up the James Bond cover identity.

Hence the new 'James Bond' could still be set in the modern day, still have Judy dench as M, and yet be a whle new agent at the same time.

The day an american plays bond is the day i drive a pickup laden with explosives into the american embassy

See my above post. The first actor to play Bond was an American, better get your explosives out!

As for the SAS bit he's supposed to me aCommander in the Royal Navy, so where the hell does the SAS bit come in?

I've read all the books and no where is this hinted at? In the books, he was always the same person, as most of the books make reference to his previous forays. Or is this a way of explaining how James Bond is played by so many different people and in different periods of history throughout the film franchise? Because frankly, if people NEED an explanation like that, then it's a little sad. It's Bond, it's timeless, That's the point. More cynically, it's also a way of indefinately continuing an incredibly successful series of films, and make lots and lots and lots of money.

It's purely a film related thing - doesn't apply to the books.

I'm honestly trying to remember when/where I read that idea now....
