elrey
As most of you probably know, the media had a circus today over a 6 year old boy who was allegedly floating alone in a helium balloon thousands of feet over Colorado. Turns out he was never inside it, but was hiding in a box in the attic. So we had non-stop coverage on every news network of an empty balloon. For at least an hour. The family, it turns out, seems to be pretty wacko: On MSNBC's The Ed Show Thursday, the wife who swapped into the Heene family for two weeks in March recalled rambunctious boys, who swore a lot and and burped and farted as they pleased. They also loved to please their father Richard, who was very particular about his science experiments, she said. None of the Heene family was very nice to her during her time there. Wife Mayumi (43) and storm scientist Richard (45) take their three kids, Bradford (8), Ryo (7) and Falcon (5), out of school to go on storm chasing missions to prove Richard's theories about magnetic fields and gravity. If conditions are right, Mayumi wakes her family by shouting "Storm Approaching, Storm Approaching!" into a bullhorn. The family sleep in their clothes so they can leap out of bed and into the storm-mobile. Richard calls Mayumi his 'ninja wife'; she maintains equipment, drives the storm-mobile, films tornadoes and waits with the kids while Richard jumps on his motorbike, heads into the eye of the storm and launches rockets to measure magnetic forces. At home the family are as chaotic as a twister: the kids have no table manners and throw themselves around the house, and while Richard devotes every moment to his research, he expects Mayumi to cook, clean and run the house without any help. Seems like the dad is a crackpot scientist, and they just let the kids do whatever they want. The weirdest thing about them seems to be this video, in which the kids yell incomprehensibly about "pussification" and "faggots in a tree trying to pee on me". So, basically... WTF? Titleist
We'll get to the truth, even if it is....full of hot air! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH By the time his dad gets done grounding him (sorry, pun) he'll wish he'd actually been in the balloon. Yeesh. This is a missed chance at a darwin award. Victory
They need to be billed for the search and rescue costs. Now. -Vic
Habakure
Do you really think they could afford it (Not saying they shouldn't be billed, imagine the cost to try and prove it, they wouldn't want to spend money without knowing they'll get it back). There is a law for this sort of thing though isn't there? I'm a bit fazy what it is right now, something to do with wasting time and all that?
zbear
Maybe they could charge them for filing a false police report on the local level. The FAA could charge them for flying a unlincensed ballon and disrupting air traffic going into DIA. Which would be a federal felony charge. I agree that family seems to be attention whores. elrey
Colorado sheriff: "balloon boy" case was a hoax http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE59E5H720091018 DENVER (Reuters) - The bizarre flight of a home-made helium balloon, thought to have a 6-year-old boy aboard, was a hoax and publicity stunt, a Colorado sheriff said on Sunday. "It has been determined that this is a hoax, that it was a publicity stunt and we believe we have evidence at this point to indicate that this was a publicity stunt in hopes to better market themselves for a reality show," Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden told reporters at a press conference. He said the family faced several charges. The sight of the flyaway balloon on live television gripped U.S. viewers for more than two hours on Thursday as the silver flying saucer-shaped contraption raced across the Colorado sky, tracked by U.S. National Guard helicopters before the boy, Falcon Heene, was found alive and well in his attic. Questions were raised after Falcon was asked during an interview on CNN why he had stayed in hiding so long when family members and other searchers were desperately calling his name. He responded: "You guys (his parents) said that, um, we did this for a show." Alderden said the parents, Richard and Mayumi Heene, could face charges of conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, filing a false report with authorities and with attempting to influence a public servant. Alderden had previously said the couple would face only misdemeanor charges in the incident. The Heene family has appeared on the ABC television reality show "Wife Swap" in which families swap mothers to deal with family problems. Richard Heene has emphatically denied that the incident was a hoax and Alderden initially said that he believed him, largely dismissing skepticism in the media.
