trfo2o
oh damn, did you get that stupid tape WGCshop uses? did all that excess glue stick on? dude, same thing happened to me but after many hours of wiping it I got it back to normal, check page 152 for my pics. Anyway I used goo gone, paper towels (with a little water), and Q-tips. Just be careful and don't let the goo gone stay on for too long, it leaves a shinyness to the metal like plastic. hardboiledcop
if you were gonna respray you should really have put the frame and slide into a soda bath/paint stripper to remove the finish. Unless its not metal, Im not exactly sure whether you can use it on the stock abs plastic.. cheers.
Mathub
Soda doesn't attack plastic.
ghost_x3
trfo2o: Nah, I got it used from SWORD09 for $100; great deal and a great guy. Also, yes, I did see your pics, they've been my wallpaper for the past week. They were really the ones that made me want to get a WA! Love the slide too. Gonna try that goo stuff, thanks! hbc: Thanks for the help, I THINK it's metal, not really sure though. Edited December 25, 2006 by ghost_x3
hardboiledcop
If you think it's metal, then it isn't. WA uses an ABS Zinc mixture to make their heavyweight plastic, slightly cold to the touch but nowhere near as cold as metal. In any case, your best bet is to use a soda bath to strip the entire finish, then spray it once more. cheers.
ghost_x3
Yeah thanks HBC, always thought it was metal since it felt cold and all. Again, why would I want to respray it tho, just wanted to make the trades visible. They are slightly, as there was a barely visible indent of where they are, so I sorta just carved it out, doesn't look too bad.
trfo2o
dude, I have a brand MEU slide and frame that was basically swapped out immediately after getting the PGC kit. I can sell it to you for $30+3% payal fee.
hardboiledcop
I assumed it was not only the trades.. it looks (in this image) as if the surface is also somewhat mottled, along with the serrations. I assumed you wanted to make it look 'as new'.. I for one, cannot stand it when a gun I own is anything short of flawless in appearance. cheers.
ghost_x3
trfo2o: Thanks for the offer, I'll send you a PM soon! HBC: Yeah, I only got about 1 thin coat of the paint on, I'll have to spray it some more later. Probably won't have to thanks to trfo2o, appreciate the help HBC; hopefully my guns will look as good as yours someday
hardboiledcop
Heh, I'm flattered , all my monies are belong.. etc etc... The only thing I'll say, youll get a much nicer finish if you strip the entire finish and apply just one or two coats.. as with most collectables, the more layers of paint applied, the more detail that is lost.. I don't know whether the bumps around the front of the slide are remainders from the glue left by the customs friendly applications, but they would also certainly be removed by soda bath, leaving you with a perfect finish. Of course, there is the best answer of all, metal kit Nothing like a full metal 1911, nothing whatsoever cheers, hbc.
uscmCorps
What HBC said. Strip all the paint and then re-apply a couple coats on the clean "canvas". You'd get a better and more even finish that way. Never tried the soda bath method though. What kind of soda are we talking about? And will it really leave the plastic and metal parts unaffected? I seem to recall science experiments from my youth showing a copper penny getting corroded and eventually dissolving away in a glass of coke.
r.ocelot
Of course, there is the best answer of all, metal kit Nothing like a full metal 1911, nothing whatsoever cheers, hbc. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not even a RS 5-7? Here's a quicky: Can you explain the phrase "soda bath" to me?
ghost_x3
Dunno, I think it maybe just baking soda? Not sure. Thanks for all the advice guys, but I think I may just buy the slide from trfo2o, doing all that other stuff would take too much time imo. Personally, I don't have a problem with the WA, makes it look likes its used
hardboiledcop
Mathub uses this method, I believe he uses Caustic Soda or 'Lye'. it is a caustic, non-solvent based stripper. Can be picked up in most hardware stores. cheers. Not even a RS 5-7? God no, if I were to opitomise ugliness, I would show a picture of the 5-7.. Scratch that, It'd be Whoopi Goldberg weilding a 5-7 Edited December 26, 2006 by hardboiledcop
r.ocelot
Whoopi Goldberg <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Gack! My EYES!!! I don't suppose you have a link to a guide on how use it properly?
hitmanNo2
Mathub and hitmanNo2 should have a V10 shoot out........ oh wait..... Hitman's doesn't work..... (oooo sick burn) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Well, my V10 seems to be working now so Still has a couple of niggles to work out but thats always the way. Mathub, did you manage to fit the copper clip in your slide ?
hardboiledcop
Gack! My EYES!!! I don't suppose you have a link to a guide on how use it properly? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You'll have to ask Mathub, I've never done it myself.. edit - but id expect that if you ask in the hardware store, they would know, I assume it would simply be a bowl of water + caustic soda. cheers. Mathub
The copper clip is not fitted yet, as I'm in the stage of testing.
trfo2o
RS sights don't work on PGC kits do they? I have no idea what the bottom of a RS sight looks like so I can't tell.
hardboiledcop
well, rs novaks are dovetailed in the same as the WA ones.. obviously Bomars are different. i should think rs novak sights should fit, but why you would want them instead of the standard ones I don't know.. cheers, hbc. trfo2o
well, in one of the magazines I got called "combat handguns" they got these ads for these great low light visible night sights you can install onto a 1911A1 type(they pictured a kimber though-didn't say they were specifically for the kimber) anyways it would be cool to have a pair.
Mathub
... cause stock sights are pot metal painted, and look ****. Prime ones are nice. RS should fit, but you'll have to make 2 small holes for the screws.
trfo2o
2 small holes into the sights? or PGC kit I got on my MEU? Mathub do you mind being a pal and takeing a pic of where to drill these holes? thanks mate! - if not, that's totally ok too, I can tryt figuring it out myself with my father.
Mathub
Well, in your original sight from WA, you should have to small threaded holes.
trfo2o
right, and before you said that I have to MAKE 2 small holes for the screws. Where? you can PM me about all of this if you'd like
