You do realize that photo editing, journalism, and digital art are classified as part of a high technology field right?

While macs have risen in popularity for college students, most of them haven't been involved in any industry yet to any extent that matters, and yes I do realize they make up a significant portion of the purchase base for mac, but these kids have to go somewhere don't they?

I'm not talking about just people who could fix hardware and software faults, these are people who know how to set up a router and change the time on their VCR (well maybe their DVD player), that's way beyond the abilities that people are claiming these "computer dimwits" will need to use the iPad, but then again why do you make a computer for a market that dosen't want or know how to use a computer, and if you are going to make one for them, why design a completely new user interface they have absolutely no experience with, so instead of them just worrying about how to use a Mac vs the PC they've had for ten years now they have to learn how to input commands all over again?

This just screams to me "we made a product for one thing, and in post production we realized we screwed up so now we are "making up" a market for it so our investors don't have a conniption fit."

Again Apple is not the company computer newbies turn to, it wasn't 20 years ago and it isn't now, people are just more secure with windows because of how common it is. This is a toy not a tool, and my iPhone is just as good, except I can use it to make phone calls.

And just to let you know I am not an apple fan boy, and I am not anti-apple, I use what works best for me, and up until this year I have only needed a mac as I could run everything I needed on my laptop, or partitions I made on it. Only this year did I purchase a toughbook as mac has yet to produce a computer that fits that cheap disposable mobile computer need that netbooks fit, I know a toughbook is a far cry from a netbook, but with where I will be using it a netbook would die.

The general argument against Apple however is that for every product they make and advertise as being the next best thing has already been made. Apple merely dumbs things down for the general public. This is fine but it would be better if those people didn't then treat Apple like a religion which must be defended at all costs. Even when it makes a product with no purpose :P

What you've just described is Marketing.

They are a company who wants people to buy there stuff.

Look at cosmetic ad's, how many of those products claim to be the next big thing?

Thing is their marketing strategies work, sales figures alone should prove that.

It's also no more of a religion than people who swear by Magpul. It's preference.

And no purpose? The Ipad fits nicely between the Ipod touch and Macbook. It's going to be good for people who JUST WANT THE INTERNET on a ten inch screen, of course it will also make a decent Ereader/photo viewer/car media/kitchen PC etc.

Can't argue about that, but it's still not the product they promised several years ago, they still need to make a OSX based tablet.

I might get one to use as a view screen for my camera, but that's about it.

apple is a marketing monster.

thats what theyre very good at.

mac's use in the creative industry is simply that people want to have a pc that they dont have to ###### about inside of or deal with microsft or simply that the mac has a 'killer app' on it.

i am in the creative industry, but i dont mind pissing about inside pc's, and i like dicking about with stuff so mac has never been a favourite for me.

actually, for a long time i was a fan of silicon graphics - simply because they made the uber dark blue boxes of serious power-hungry side of the creative industry - and mac couldnt hold a light ot them in terms of power.

plus, my 'killer apps' ran better on them than on the mac.

thinking about 'pro photographers' arent most of the gear shooting to CF cards?

has the ipad got a CF slot?

I love gadgets & tech n all sorts. But i dont really see the point in this. Its just a giant iPod Touch? isnt it?

If it had internet anywhere (like the iPhone, but faster) then i suppose that seems better.

But still i dont get it? It seems a bit 'gimicy' possibly trying to rival the Microsoft Touch Table?

If you had a Macbook and you didnt want to take the entire thing out with you somwhere then maybe this would be good.

EXACTLY.

The second gen would probably be better. It seems interesting, could be good as a new type of 'portable DVD player' or portable entertainment center of sorts.

If it could be used in conjuction with 'smart systems' then that would be exellent. What i mean by that is the abillity to control your TV, DVD, Speakers, computer (mac or PC) etc while being able to stream the Media to the tablet for anywhere WiFi viewing. That would be cool.

It does just seem like a big gimmick. Unless it turns out to have some kind of Uber Kool tech inside it that Apple have said nothing about then its a giant iPod that imo is less functional because of its size!

I use my blackberry all the time and I don't have to wipe the fingerprints off the screen every 10 minutes to read the text :P

I do have to say that it looks very much like they've run out of idea's, whats next the I-tablet? an even bigger touch?

It's possible, there are apps that let your ipod touch control your mac.

If 90% of apps are going to work with it it's a definite possibility.

And in response to your earlier post it does have 3G ( well not the base model) no idea if the UK well actually get this tho.

I'm however looking forward to the games, Chess anyone?

:P

Lack of flash will not hurt this device in any substantive way.

The thing that needs to be thought about in this hoopla that seems to get over looked is that online flash games are not designed to work with a touchscreen interface. The lack of a permanent keyboard means that a large percentage of flash games will not function on a touch pad device such as the iPad easily. f your looking for games developed for touchscreen/accelerometer devices, they are readily available via apples app store, and there are TONS of them.

Flash is Adobe's worst product, (probably) and yet its one of the most popular (again probably. number 2 IIRC, number 1 being PDF file format) Its a cumbersome and old programming style, very burdened with old versions junk.

Don't get me wrong, I would like to be able to watch some swet porn or Hulu or what have you on my iPad. But I think the market will win out there. If CNN sees a bigger market in the iPad generation they will switch from flash to something that the iPad can support, and support well.

That or they will release a CNN app, which is preferable for everyone involved (aside from adobe of course). Then CNN gets the advantage of having a hard link to your iPad shortcuts. 1 Button away from live CNN coverage of whomever's bald spot is showing today.

Ebay saves the day: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HP-TC1100-tablet-Pm-...=item3efc5df3b0

They're about £150

Yeah, 'refurb' & 'ebay' are two of the most reliable words in the English language.

I'm sure you'll be able to find a refurb ipad for £20 on ebay if you look hard enough. Even though it ain't due out 'till march!

Sorry, but if you can't get it on the high st, it don't count.

From what I remember, its because back in the day when desktop publishing was coming to Windows and apple machines, you couldn't colour manage a windows machine (very important when you want to publish stuff / work with photographs / art / graphics) while you could on an apple. That and they had better support for some industry standard fonts (which windows didn't want to pay the licensing fees for) Colour management was added in win2k, but I suppose the industry didn't see much point in changing then.

Of course, this could all be wrong, as it was derived from my short experience as a photographer for various small newspapers while at uni and from the internet.

Yes they do.

Ever wondered why?

As it stands, the ipad (no, i will not capitalise a random letter!) does nothing my G1 (HTC Dream) doesnt do. Which means it does nothing ANY ANDROID PHONE EVER can do, except have a bigger screen.

And, to be honest, i dont need a bigger screen. I've got a full qwerty keyboard (5 rows, and everything!), touch screen, GPS, wifi, bluetooth, all the bells and whistles.

IF i need to type up a document, i can bash out the basics of it, the flesh it out when i get home to a normal computer/laptop with a bigger, better screen, and a bigger, better keyboard.

i can do excel spreadsheets, PDF's, pretty much everything my laptop can do, really. the only real advantage my laptop has is the size.

Yeah, i accept the fact apple have tried to create an entirely new market, between smartphones and laptops. I'm not sure it needed creating. It's a bit like saying "oh, herro. I've created a wonderful new car thats smaller than a smart car/Tata Nano, but bigger than a motorbike! you can drive it places! it only holds one passenger, and becuase its electric, only goes at 20mph with a maximum range of 20miles. but its new! lookie here! and only £30,000!"

One, they already exist (mobility scooters, or mopeds/motorbikes) two, is a bloody stupid idea. Why would you have a tiny car with atrocious speed and mileage when you could buy a bigger, better car, with more seats, and better fuel economy, etc?

Exactly, while IBM were aiming for businesses in general, Apple went for the DTP and graphics markets.

Once a business has chosen, or been force to choose due to lack of alternatives, a computer system, they can then be tied in due to the cost of support.

So if a company has macs throughout, the distruption to the business of moving onto a different system and training support staff to look after it can outweigh the savings such a system would bring.

For smaller business however they often can make the change for areas of the business, so have the finance/hr/sales departments for instance on cheaper, more suitable PC's.

You also have the image issue, where people have the mindset that if you want to do design/graphics you must have a mac, it can be detrimental for uneducated potential clients to be shown around and not see macs.

I dont' get the argument that a mac user in a design company must therefore know what the best computers are.

Computer user does not mean knowledgeable about computers. Mum for instance worked in a high tech industry, she wrote the manual for the Puma helicopter, but does she know about computers? Hell no.

They had one mac in the office, because the guy who used it liked it and it did what he needed and they didn't need to replace it.
