oil prices will not jump at all, unless US buys alot of oil to replace what is lost.

all US oil goes to the US, consumer of 25.9% of the worlds oil and producer of 10%. Even though the US only has 2% of the worlds oil reserves. Not that europe is much better with 19.1% of oil consumption and only 4.3% of production.

Though Britain produces more than it uses/imports

Don't understand why the petrol prices are so high in England then really if we're not using as much as we produce lol.

US Fuel tax: $0.46 per US gallon

UK fuel tax: £2.29 per US gallon

At the current exchange rate, that means we pay roughly 7 times more fuel tax than Americans do.

I think that solves the mystery. ;)

Oil price jumps aren't actually based on changes in supply, those are just the excuses. I wouldn't be surprised to see oil prices go up. Then again, they always are.

Except when anything dodgy happens in OPEC countries.

You might see fuel prices go up in the USA if they increase tax on fuel in order to recoup any costs incurred in dealing with this... assuming the government do actually get around to doing anything significant.

Even with all the tax petrol in Britain is still good value.

Think of everything that has to happen for it to get to the pumps then compare it to the price of bottled water.

How much fun is bottled water?

Not much.

How much fun is blasting round a twisty B road?

Loads.

Good value? I fill up my 80 litre tank on the good stuff for about 7 quid out here. In the UK I'd be crying if I had to fill the same tank up every week! Nearly £100 a tank! That's quite a price difference so to say it's good value is a joke as it still undergoes the same process as in the UK and that is with big businesses like ARAMCO making loads of profit and paying it's workers wonderfully for the effort too.

I know what you are saying. It would seem like it is happy but unbeknown to you your engine would be happier on different fuel.

I did back to back dyno runs on my friend's rolling road, same car, same day, same weather, same tyres, different fuel.

I had a difference of 41 bhp between the worst performing fuel and the best.

It's not just down to the octane reading but also the different additives put in the fuel by the petrol companies.

For example, Tesco's 99 octane gave better power than BP's 101.

Hmm, I never knew that. So does that mean if I buy petrol from Asda, it'll better/worser than Tesco? I rather niavely assumed it was all the same. So who sells the best normal unleaded?

I'm not too sure on the regular types of petrol, I have a modified turbo engined car with a knock sensor so I can get the benefit of the better petrol.

As such I have never used or tested the normal stuff.

It might be worth your time to google it, there is some real data out there amongst all the subjective opinion.

So Top Kill is officially fail

Now they are going to cut the riser right at the top of the BOP stack and use the containment dome

Seems most viable to me, with the hot oil going right from the stack to the dome the BOP wont have time to act as a heat exchanger, and hopefully will mitigate crystal issues from last attempt.

There is a whole bunch of hooplah from independant specialists now that the leak at the BOP is not the main leak(determination made after the video was live streaming for days during the Top Kill) and that the oil that is being seen on land is resultant from another leak several miles away. That would indicate further casing damage than was previously thought.....

There is a whole bunch of hooplah from Some Lunatic with a specific agenda & not much of a clue now that the leak at the BOP is not the main leak(determination made after the video was live streaming for days during the Top Kill) and that the oil that is being seen on land is resultant from another leak several miles away. That would indicate further casing damage than was previously thought.....

Fixed that for you. If you are refering to Matt Simons- I don't think any other body has backed up his claim, but because it is nice & sensationalist, it gets lots of play on the TV

I don't know if you've ever been to America stealth but it's a pretty big country. Low population density too. To go about your daily life you need a car. Literally need a car to do anything. There's isn't the option to jump on a bus or take the subway. The situation in Europe and America are not the same. Europeans can afford to tax gasoline as much as they do because the demand isn't nearly as inelastic as it is in the states.

Not to say that some gentle price pressures aren't a bad thing. But increasing the price to the levels of Europeans would mean economic ruin for America. America absolutely needs its oil, at least for the time being, if it expects to grow.

PS:

I'm sort of glad that this has happened. I think this disaster will serve as wake up call to America. Deep water drilling and such just shows how desperate we've become to search out this substance. But once that people see black oil covering up their beaches the reality of the situation will start to sink in. This is not sustainable and we need to figure out another way of doing this.

I hope this becomes the Three Mile Island of the oil industry.

I don't think Three Mile island is a valid comparison. At the end of the day the effects of 3 mile island were like 1 millirem, which is generally safer than standing in front of your microwave for a few minutes.

This however will kill thousands of animals, destroy or neuter thousands of miles of coastline, and destroy the lively hood of countless people who count on the ocean and the coastline for their source of income.

Wake up call, yes, however you're comparing are apples to oranges on scale.

PPS: Deepwater drilling goes on all over the world without accidents like this. Even in west Africa. I think that probalby says more about saftey standards in GOM not managing risk properly, than the risk being un-manageable. Somthing to consider.

Sorry but this event will not change the status quo in America. The last one up in Alaska should have taught people something. But no, its just well lets make it look pretty, but not really do anything as natural will sort itself out of its own accord. But it wont if this sort of thing keeps happening.

Also I don’t think that America is bigger is any sort of argument to your need for oil. What personal transport boils down to is convenience. If you can go wherever you want, whenever you want, you are more likely to do that. You are still going to have to cross the same distance as if you were to use public transport, but you have the choice of when to do it.

Population density is specific to a location. You can’t make a sweeping statement like America has a sparse population density, as it doesn’t. Parts of America like any other country have very sparsely populated areas. Equally they also have some very densely populated areas, like cities.

I’m still amazed that I have seen no mention in the news of the National Guard being deployed to help with the clean up effort. Not really understanding why as that is what they are there for. I will also be interested to see as the hurricane season is predicted to have some quite strong tropical storms how will they effect the oil already on land?

I’m sure the British have great oil drilling standard’s, they must be better at drilling oil then say…setting up new servers?

If you are refering to the servers which these very forums are setup on then thats possibly not the best argument, for many years this forum has been hosted on servers in America, and unless that changed in the last upgrade (which I'm not sure it has, although I'm not 100% certain which is why I say possibly) they still are.

Well I'm not really surprised we get taxed more on petrol I mean it is rip off Britain. Paying tax out of our backside for everything.

I bet most of the people who moan about all these taxes also moan about the idea of public services being cut.

Don't want to live within the yearly tax revenue and only have public services that are affordable and don't involve debt but don't want to pay the taxes for the public services that may be cut, welcome to the United Kingdom!

Hey no credence given on my part, i used the word hooplah lol.

Yeah no telling what hurricanes will do to this mess.

The taxes that Europeans have on their fuel have a purpose. They buy their oil on the open market just like we do, but they tax their fuel. Their taxes go to things like public transportation and infrastructure maintenance. They learn to deal with higher fuel prices and often times with lower income than we do. The world wouldn't come crashing down on us if we had to pay $6 per gallon, I was paying over $4 about 2 years ago. It sucked but it happened, and it was all profit for the companies, there were no taxes that doubled the costs just inflated market price.

But I'm not so sure I even like that idea. Increased public transit opens up geographic areas to new demographics. I don't know if I want people from Cypress or Boyle Heights or Downey with cheap, fast public transit into Santa Monica. And with that comment I will never be able to run for public office as a Democrat.

lol, well you could always run as an independent. But you have a fair point with regards to opening new areas to new groups of people. But them you also have the trade off with the extra economic strength that new/more people can bring to an area. and the benefits that this extra income can have for individuals, the community, local services... the list goes on. But its all down to how you manage it.

That being said sometimes developing new links to remote/previously unconnected places they can still be just as uncharted to outsiders but the new connections bring benefits to the locals.

Anyway what is the latest scoop on the leak? For some reason i cant get on any US media sites to see what spin is being put on current events?
