With 40ish days to go we should probably start a new thread about the elections. :)

Good call Chimpy.

Please do any discussion/debate related to the US presidential election in here. Keep it civil, though.

The latest polls give Obama the lead in electoral votes, 229 to McCain's 166, with 143 tossups:

No! If McCain dies in the first term, we'll be stuck with that wack-job, fundamentalist, hockey-mom as president instead

She's a lot better than Joe Biden. That man's arrogance makes me sick.

And I mentioned Biden because it would be him who would succeed President Barack Hussein Obama Jr. should the latter die from unnatural causes while in office.

He might be arrogant, but she thinks that the world was "made" in 6 days. That is mentally ill.

America has the biggest economy in the world, bigger than the three nearest combined. If the next President of the US doesn't think globally they are going to be even more ######. My theoretical vote would go to Obama since he seems to make the most sense on actual issues out of the two. The choice of Palin as a potential Republican VP shows how much identity politics rather than rationalism rules the US voting public.

Stratfor very kindly just mailed this article on the Foreign Policy landscape the next President will inherit.

Sarah Palin. Is it just me...? I mean, wouldn't you?

I'm not sure I would, just on principle.

If you look more carefully at the 1,300 searches Hitwise tracked, one of the most commonly entered search topics surrounding Palin was "hot photos." Other queries common to the American public: "Sarah Palin Bikini Photos," "Sarah Palin Naked," "Sarah Palin Nude."

For somebody living in the UK it dosent matter who i want to win, here in the UK you dont vote for who you want in power. Premier Brown got into power with a grand total of 0 votes!

Just promise me America you will have somebody with at least 1 brain cell to be next president, the last chimp-in-a-man-suit* you had for president was a complete disaster -_-

As for my opinion the McCain side looks a little redneck to me and i hear Obama could be assassinated if he becomes President...other than that i'm not sure what to say as i've stopped paying attention to American politics ;)

*This statement could be offensive to chimps with more intelligence than Adolf bush (about 99% of them IIRC ;) )

I expect Obama will win.

The coverage of this years election has been totally shoddy, Obama is a total media darling, its hard to escape pictures of him at home with the kids, its just a distraction from the issues. McCain's plan for Iraq is nuts, although I get the impression Obama may take a while to get the troops home.

Bob Barr is intresting, although a bit of a dissapointment - was for restrictions on MJ, and also for Patriot act. Bit of an odd choice for him to be chosen, although I guess all things considered I would rather have him in charge then Obama or McCain.

I dunno I have the same problem with US Libertarians as I do with socialists of various stripes. Far too much "ra-ra-ra my utopian vision is best" and too little basis in the messy reality of life. Ditto almost all of Palin's policies, talk about representing an idyll that has never really existed.

I agree, although I think you can say the same about most minor parties, especially when they are ideology based. Still, the Libertarian party seem to be the only ones who are concerned about the nature of the federal reserve, and what with the current financial climate, I'm surprised its not being discussed more (I dunno, is it being discussed?)

That's because you basically vote for the political party, not it's leader. The only people who technically voted for Blair were those in his constituency.

Ron Paul was my man in this election. But one must make compromises. If I have to sacrifice my vote to McCain/Palin in order to save myself from President Barack Hussein Obama Jr., then so be it.

He might be arrogant, but she thinks that the world was "made" in 6 days. That is mentally ill.

Since when is having faith equivalent to mental illness?

She may be the governor of a state and the vice presidential nominee, but she's still a citizen. And as such she has the same spectrum of rights as the rest of us do. She has her freedom of religion and she can believe in whatever she wants to. As long as she isn't preaching to the people.

I'd rather have a religious, down-to-earth frontierswoman as a VP candidate than some high-minded rat from snobby Delaware who can't talk for three minutes without sucking off his unpatriotic boss.

And let's not even talk about Obama, his wife, and his positively insane pastor. You think the world being made in six days is mentally ill, try this: White people invented HIV to kill black people. And no, I don't believe that he sat in that church for 20 years listening to his "uncle" and not pick up any of that. Yeah, I attended that church for twenty years but I never inhaled.

McCain is the right man for the job. At least he won't turn Iraq into a defeat (like Clinton did with Somalia) and appease terrorists. Obama can f___ off with his socialist agenda. I'd rather keep my paycheck, guns, and freedoms. I don't like the government's hands on my shoulders.

Because republicans have been doing such a good job upholding the US constitution and the laws of the US over these past 8 years, right? They've been doing an amazing job at maintaining the economy, right? You people seem to think that because there's an "evil and unpatriotic" democrat in office, the world will go to hell, cats and dogs living together. You forget something. Congress and the Senate. Checks and Balances. Etc. You think these taxes are the fault of the president? Not entirely. The senate and congress thought it up. The people YOU elected to make these decisions for you. "No taxation without representation" They're your representation. Quit bitching. People seem to forget that there's 3 branches to the US government. Not one. Keep in mind that the economy usually does best under a democrat president. We're so far in debt that if it were a hole, we'd be in china. Under Clinton, some of that debt was actually paid off. The USD was actually doing well. Our money was worth something in the world.

And let's not even mention the fact that the Iraq war was started without the consent of congress, and that the PATRIOT (great name, btw) act was signed which took away many of the Unalienable rights of US citizens. There is no "well what if he is a terrorist...."you DO NOT VIOLATE THE CONSTITUTION UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. That is FASCISM.

And you have the BALLS to call democrats socialists...

Who said I'm a Republican?

You think I like George W. Bush? Open your eyes - not everyone who disagrees with Democrats is a Republican. In fact, this is what I think is wrong with our political system. The Republican and Democratic Parties have grown too large and too powerful. Elections are no longer elections - we are merely choosing the lesser evil most of the time.

Like Thomas Jefferson once said, the tree of liberty should indeed be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Aside, I'd like to spend a moment to discuss the so-called "Obama-mania."

I'm a student at University of California, Santa Barbara. Most of my fellow students will vote for Obama/Biden on November 4th. However, most of them are merely going with the "fad." They can't even name five of their candidate's policies. This, to me, is disturbing. What have we done? Are we really going to hand the fate of an entire nation to an unqualified man with a murky past whose only talent is giving passionate speeches? This isn't high school, people. We should be voting based on competency, not popularity.

EDIT: Now, about the other branches of the federal government, since you brought it up.

Yes, the Bush Administration is truly evil in your eyes. However, you seemed to have forgotten the fact that we've had a Democrat-dominated Congress since 2006 with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as the symbol. If you blame Republicans for the loss of civil liberties, then may I ask you this: what have the Democrats in Congress done to defend those civil liberties?

This is another reason why I distrust Obama/Biden. Our government is about checks and balances, no? Do you really think that this system would be maintained when both Capitol Hill and the White House are controlled by radicals on the left?

The phrase "mental illness" is used in this context to imply that the only possible explanation for the belief in certain principles is delusions. The idea that every scientist worth his salt is for some reason or another conspiring against you is paranoia, the evidence that scientists present also points toward their conclusion, to deny factual evidence is delusional. To accept what you are told merely on the basis of who said it, irregardless of its feasibility, is the logical fallacy of Ipse-dixitism.

The Badger finds it hard to think someone should have command of the worlds most powerful economy and military with those credentials, irregardless of the how ever close they live to Russia.

Oh yeah, and Reborn, we all knew his middle name was Hussein, and we got over it about a year ago.

When your faith makes you think that the world was made in 6 days and is only 3000 years old or whatever. C'mon.

Apart from the stuff about Democrats being socialists, I think you make some good points. Young people voting for the hip guy is pretty stupid.

Just to ask, if Ron Paul was your guy, why not Barr? Pretty similar politically, or is it just a question of a wasted vote?

Cheers.
