As of sometime today a weird error was generated for users trying to visit our pages who used Internet Explorer 6 or 7.
The root of the problem seemed to be Sitemeter which is a free package that we use to track our visitor count (and have done for years).
I’ve stripped out the counter from all the pages that I can remember so the error should have gone for all users.
If for whatever reason you still get the error, here’s a solution:
Here is the fix for users of IE 6 and 7 who are getting the "operation aborted" message. (Via user "Ferg" on another web site.)
Follow These Steps Exactly:
Open Internet Explorer.
Click on the menu Tools -> Internet Options.
Click on the tab Security.
Click on the icon Restricted Sites.
Click on the button Sites.
Under Add this website to the zone:
Type the text ‘ *.sitemeter.com ’ (with asterisk and dot & without the quotes).
Click the Add button. Click Close. Click OK.All sites will work again without error messages coming up.
We’re currently waiting for an update so we can put the counters back at this time. More information about the error can be found here.
More details can be read on our forums here.
Thanks go to Marlowe, and Rhino for alerting me and to Aitch for posting the MSDN link which had the explanation in it.
