I kept having to spend a lot of time on maintenance & repair for my gas pistols. Constant leaks, loading nozzles frequently breaking, etc. After pulling my head out of dark places and also doing some research, I determined it was likely because I was using propane rather than Green Gas. So I switched back to Green Gas exclusively for the last few months and haven’t had an issue since.

If it doesn’t serve a direct life saving function you will probably pitch it. It’s easy to talk big on the forums and stateside but when the bullets start flying and you’re humping 100 pounds of gear over rugged mountains, unnecessary crap is getting pitched. I have seen this old Firepower vs Mobility equation play out again and again and I readily detect guys who DON’T get it. And yet having a fixed blade on your LBE is highly advised. For both utility and defensive use. The Cold Steel Outdoorsman and Tanto Lite blades fill the bill. At just 7 ounces, these featherweights can come along for the ride, ready for service. The are extremely high value for their abilities: only $20 (price, availability subject to change). Don’t expect heavy duty splittling, hacking, or chopping performance here. That’s not their job. Utility, food prep, and stabbing bad guys is their calling and in that they will rock. The 4116 German produced steel is up to the task, featuring adequate but not phenomenal rust resistance and edge holding. They arrive "offensively sharp" which is just the way we like them. The blades’ bright finish on these versions should be DuraCoated (example shown) for improved camouflage if their combat bound. Krylon paint will work after a good sanding job too. The Tanto is a featherweight version of Cold Steel’s gorgeous full featured Tantos but it’s much lighter. The tip on both knives are strong with great penetrating power. The Outdoorsman blade is much better belly and utility capabilities. You can see the blades were cold formed not precision ground like their more expensive, heavier counterparts. This saves money. With this in mind, I wouldn’t expect too much out of that "bone breaker’ on the Outodoorsman Lite. The handles are excellent: polypropylene frame covered in sticky Kraton. They provide lots of room for grip variety and security and their pommels can lay down some smack. No lanyard holes are present on them but you can drill one through these full-tang blades. The 6 inch blades are 3mm thin and that’s preferred, again making them light and fast in hand. The sheaths suck but are appropriate for the value point. About 1/3 of the handles will protrude from the pouch sheaths. Creativity can adapt them to LBE but a new sheath might have to be constructed for higher versatility. Also ready to integrate into your bugout system, the Tanto and Outdoorsman lites will give you lots of cutting power. Seamless integration into your LBE (maybe lingerie if you’re Katy Perry!). That’s the elegant Gryphon M-10 by Cutlery Shoppe. It’s unobtrusive and hangs on through all your maneuvers. Designed by Bob Terzuola, this mini stabber features the upgraded VG10 steel that now arrives wicked sharp from box. The 4" spearpoint dominated the cardboard stabbing protocol I put it through (shown). After a 100 or so pierces and some cutting tests, the hollow ground edge still has a keen edge; very suprising. VG10 continues to be one of my favorite knife steels for this edge retention, ease of sharpening, and rust resistance. The Gryphon M-10 tip is strong and showed no wear in my testing. I’m sure if abused someone can break the knife but it’s a rugged full-tanged companion. Black DLC coating wears well and kills reflection if you put the knife into my recommened Soldier POU. The 4" blade in a tactical folder would be considered large so don’t be fooled by the Gryphon’s compact form; some consider the size to be ideal for CQB (I continue to like a larger fixed blade for reach if it can be carried/integrated). Some jimping resides topside but it could be sharper. The Zytel handle has excellent side traction and features the "Bob T" squared shoulders which I’d like to see more rounded. But in the short cutting tasks this little Gryphon will be called upon to do, it probably won’t matter. The Mike Sastre (of River City Sheaths) produced sheath is total perfection and each one is hand fitted to each knife. It doesn’t rattle, lose its shape, get waterlogged, or wear out. In extended upside down carry in my Run N Guns, the knife held firm. Rubber pull dot strapping or the Sastre-designed G-Clip are the attachment methods and they too are perfectly executed. You can opt for IWB, upside down, horizontal, or vertical carry methods to suit your systems. Mike’s "Draw Poinint" methodology uses the Gryphon and this sheath. At just 6 ounces, the M-10 will be there when you need it without being obnoxious and it will be less failure prone than most tactical folders. Value is high considering this handmade sheath and the demonstrated toughness of the blade. In Soldier Blade or EDC POUs the little M-10 will give your carry system some reliable edged weapon backup. ///////////////////Nutnfancy Likability Scale: 8.5 out of 10
