I found this gun to be rather sub-par when it comes to accuracy. Closer ranges were OK but longer ranges this gun really tinkers out. The magazine is a huge factor in this, as they feed horribly.

This is easily one of the best piston AR-15s that I’ve shot to date. But looking at the somewhat goofy forend on the Rock River Arms PDS Carbine #LR1222, I had my doubts. It seems most AR manufacturers have answered the market demand for piston ARs for their perceived advantages. Some are better than others. So it was with a certain level of surprise that my crew members and myself saw the PDS perform so well in my aggressive testing process. The ergonomics on this model are excellent although the ribbed polymer forend on this model is a bit wide (but flat and stable for barricade shooting too!). 7.2 lbs (naked) For a mid-profile barreled AR is a great accomplishment and it flat out excited me. The PDS is fast into action, easy to carry, and nimble in transition. I have found in my reviews that most piston ARs lose out in the "weighting game" to their DI counterparts. Not so in this model of the gun. The PDS lso available in an aluminum Tri-Rail version (#LR1297, numbers subject to change) but I found those current versions to be heavier with added disadvantage of skin removal as you actuate the ambi, folding charging handles (mounting polymer rail covers might help). The PDS trigger, while pulling slightly higher than the RRA DI guns, still provides excellent feel and crispness. I would not change it (but standard AR triggers will fit). The proprietary RRA "Piston Driven System" or PDS provides a soft recoil impulse, clean bolt operation, easy maintenance (shown), and outstanding reliability. It is completely removeable and serviceable by the user (including short short piston in regulator housing). Fieldstrip is fast and easy (shown). Being completely different than standard M4/AR-15 sytems, the PDS does away with any possibility of carrier tilt since it has no buffer tube. This allows for a unique folding stock and expect to see new variations on current models. This makes the PDS more compact to carry than even standard M4s. The stock locks solidly with its CNC milled tongue and groove (slight wiggle noted). The PDS Carbine is an outgrowth of the PDS Pistol (which makes for a smokin’ cool SBR) and features a monolithic receiver which gives rock solid optics mounting. The charging handles work great after some training and follow the H&K convention. This feature makes the PDS for lefty friendly. This PDS comes with a Hogue handgrip and 6 pos. M4 style stock (any others could be fitted). Accuracy on this innovative gun was nothing short of spectacular for a piston AR: about 1 MOA noted even with inexpensive ball ammo (shown). I was amazed at this and it would seem this piston and barrel system gives nothing up to DI guns in the accuracy department. Although not free floated, this system is locked down and vibration free. Current barrels feature 5.56mm chambering, 1 in 9 twist, and no chrome lining. Other variations are planned. A standard 1/2 x28 threaded A2 flashhider comes along for the ride on the almost perfectly profiled barrel: .65 diameter after regulator, .725 under handguard. No failures of any kind were noted in testing with about 400 rounds fired of brass cased ammunition. Steel cased ammo may bring disappointment. Current PDS carbines are not suppressor compatible but RRA promises fixes to this along with new, lighter rails, BUIS integration, and different stock options. Value is good considering the usually higher priced and HEAVIER piston AR-15 options.
