We spent an evening at the range with the great guys and gals of GPI Custom Gunworks in Jacksonville, FL. They brought out some of their shop’s collection and let the Airsoftology and ASB guys loose to have some fun.

In this video, Jonathan Houston (owner of ASB) unloads an entire 100 round CMAG of .223 in full auto using a Short Barrel (10.5") M4 with a Noveske "Fire Pig" Flash Suppressor.

We have to admit… This is the best way to spend $30+ in 10 seconds, if we do say so ourselves.

As we’ve seen from Ruger before, this is not the first gun to the party but it might be one of the best. The Ruger American Rifle wears an in your face name, perhaps suggesting that if you don’t like it you’re Un-American! Maybe the Ruger Allied would be a better name as it serves as a direct counter point to the Savage Axis (and for that matter the Marlin X7 series). We actually had a hard time telling the gun apart from the Savage Axis (keeping the stickers on and a different scope helped). But the American delivers the important stuff and packs in tons of value to its price level. Its 6 lbs 4 oz naked weight (7 lbs 7 oz usually with scope and mounts) makes it a good mountain rifle or all around hunting choice. Other POUs might include Survival Rifle and Recreational (discussed in video). Similar to the X7 and Axis, the American uses steel bedding block to lock the gun into a plastic stock. This results in a free floated barrel that showed excellent accuracy for the type. Contrary to many reports though, this hammer forged 22" tube, the American could not deliver MOA accuracy even with careful, locked down shooting and premium ammuntion (shown). But accuracy is still excellent for its type and it equaled the accuracy of its direct competition and actually even that of heavier and more expensive bolt guns. The sporter weight barrel is designed for 1 to 4 shots then a cool down. However is 450 yard tactical shooting and on the range we ran it hard and without break in. With that in mind perhaps the accuracy shown is even more remarkable. A detailed run down of the American Rifle features is shown and most are excellent, some beating the competition. Discussed is the Ruger bladed trigger, stock ergos, bolt design and operation, detachable 4 round polymer magazine, recoil pad, and important considerations in scoping and distance shooting your American. I do have a favorite feature of the American, any guesses? The cost on this US produced hunting rifle is attractive and it will beat some modded out Mosin Nagants and shoot better. For around $300 to $350 you’ll score a hard use, fully modernized, straight shooting, and ultra reliable bolt action rifle with a good trigger. If you’re looking for a pride of ownership hunting or collectible rifle this ain’t it. Instead it’s a functional woods tool that gets the job done and at a low cost. The American was very low if at all on my reviewing list but this TNP purchase, and subsequent testing answers the call of thousands of TNPrs who wanted it.
